the local paper,
The person who wrote the article I think evaded the Vietnam draft, he hints at it. At any rate, he is a super liberal, who constantly bitches about our country. He also is a militant tree hugger IMO. Writing the reply might not get published but it's satisfying to me. Here it is.
BTW, the column is on page 3A of the Ft. Wayne News Sentinel, Aug 2. He wants the PC "incorrect' names of Ft. Wayne and its streets changed. General Wayne 'slaughtered' the Indians at Kekionga."
Here's my reply for what it's worth
I just came from viewing the internet on my computer and observed the political opinions which are wreaking havoc with our respect for each other. The news, in general, is focusing on the bad. . I decided to read the printed word instead. I picked up my copy of the News Sentinel, a paper which, at one time, was called “Your Good Evening Newspaper” I turned to page 3A and found the latest guest article by Ft. Wayne’s naysayer, Terry Doran. Evidently, not only do we have to flagellate ourselves about the present and the future, but we need to bring up the distant past to reinforce our feelings of unworthiness. Bravo! I read his article but I failed to see who he was trying to convince and what he was trying to do. Changing the names of Ft. Wayne streets, I guess, must now be politically correct just as banning the Dixie flag in the South. History is to be redone. Luckily I live in New Haven and ,at first glance, I don’t believe that our streets are named for any rascals. Names like Park, Smith, Lincoln Highway (that shouldn’t bother any one), West Circle, Broadway and Rose Ave, all seem to be PC neutral. Whew! Further reading of his article and I noted that Mr. Doran got in a dig through quoting Mark Twain who Mr. Doran said, that he called soldiers” uniformed assassins.”. I don’t believe that Mr. Doran ever served in the military, I seem to remember, from one of his columns that he said that he declined. Whether that is a fact or not,I don’t know. I will say that I strongly resent the quote as it was presented in his article. I am a Korean War Veteran who recently was on the Honor Flight, again, Mr. Doran, I repeat , the HONOR FLIGHT!. There are many in our community who recognize the veterans as ones who served, not as assassins. You, Mr. Doran, are entitled to your constantly bitter opinions of the United States just as I am entitled to point out the good from my perspective. Quite frankly I received nothing but more bad ‘vibes’ from your article. I sincerely wish that you could see more good as a citizen of this Republic. At 88 years of age, I certainly find occasionally good news but, then again, I parked my white horse years ago. Wayne A. Doenges
