Assuming I have a welder that is pretty good at welding aluminum...

Would aluminum be a good metal to custom make an auxiliary gas tank/can??

Provided, of course, that I properly vent it to avoid over/under pressuring the container.

I'm not a guru, but the fuel cell I bought from eBay is aluminum though I painted it black. It has two vents. One side is capped off and the other side has an internal ball that prevents spillage if tilted too far.

The belly tank I have and that many others use is made of alumnimum..

I'm an amateur welder of sorts with a 180 amp TIG welder. It will handle up to 3/8 going slow on small stuff. I would think something thinner would be used on a small tank.

My belly tank looked like 1/4".

Alumnimum requires more heat than an equivalent thickness of steel.

Thank you sir.  I built it to use on a ss1000 to avoid stopping frequently. Haven't used it since though it's fast to install on the rack with a couple of knobs. Holds 4 gallons.

Tapping the knowledge of the masses here.  I have come across, and am considering an '85 GW Interstate in very good condition.  It has 33000 original miles, air ride which still works, no sound system, good carbs and balanced.  The known weak parts have been recently replaced by a qualified Honda mechanic that I trust (stator, relays etc). He rides nothing but wings, and was working on this bike since the previous owner bought when it was two years old.  There is some minor pitting on the cases,  and minor paint issues on otherwise good paint, and the plastic is solid with no sign of cracks or repair.  The front fender has been repainted with a good result. Tires are good and about two yrs old. It is a 1200, very well kept older bike.  The seats are like new.  $3800. What you think?

Many boat gas tanks are aluminum.

This is what we call a thread hijack. It's completely unrelated to anything anyone has said in this thread. You should start a new topic with your question.
