I took a quick ride up to the Black Hills last week.  As long as I was there I rode through Sturgis.  It was the first official day of the Rally, so it was plenty busy but not crazy.  I noticed plenty of vacancies at motels in nearby Deadwood.  Here are a few pictures.

Main street had lots of bikes (99% H-Ds) but there was still room for more.

You always see some nice custom machines.  Actually this was in Hill City which also reserves its main street for motorcycles.

I wasn't the only Goldwing rider in Sturgis.  There's a little of everything there.

Is this where the H-D riders get their darkside tires?

Weather was perfect.  I always prefer riding the Black Hills to the Sturgis scene.

I'm sure that during the rest of the year that banner is not displayed but for this couple of weeks that is where the proprietor believes the business (and money) to be.  Honestly, the 1%ers resent the "family types"  that attend Sturgis.  They will tell you it was their rally before all the non-outlaw bikers intruded.

Nice ride.  Crowded place.

Emily and I had breakfast there once during InZane XV.  We were the only customers, the place was bare-bones for décor, and the prices were high, but we didn't want to put helmets/jackets/etc. back on without knowing where to try next.

I thought the rally was started by a couple of local (non-outlaw) clubs working together to host motorcycle races and hill climbs.

I like SD, especially the west end.

We've shot a lot of Birds there, great people.

The last time I was in the black hills and Bad Lands was on a x-ctry bike trip after the service in the fall of 1971. We were able to camp right under the guys of Mount Rushmore. The caves were nice as well as Deadwood. I wish I had known more of the history at the time. I'd sure like to get back just to see what has changed.

I had the privilege of bow hunting in the Black Hills in the 70's.  My friend lived in Rapid City and knew the Hills very well. We went where tourists never went and places you couldn't easily take a street bike.

Beautiful country but we had to be careful that we didn't fall down old mine shafts.  Hunting around Silver City was 10 times better than hanging around beer joints in Sturgis, imo.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

I use to park out front and eat there every morning! They have good food. Most at the booth are just prospects. They have a club house about 8 blocks down beside One Eyed Jacks.

I'm not sure the banner was in their window. The HA had a booth right next to the diner and maybe it just seemed that way. My brother and I ate there cause it was air conditioned. Food was so so and like everything during Sturgis it was over priced.

And that right there is why I've never desired to go.
