Neutral light switch

I sometimes find that I get into neutral but, the green light does not come on.  The bike thinks it's in gear when it's not which affects starting.  What's up with that and how can I fix it?  I suspect that it's maybe a loose switch.

Sometimes my neutral light is green when I'm in gear. Blegghhh...

-Mike "what do we do?"

Switch replacement time!

I got tired of dealing with that on one of my Valks. No problem finding neutral, but got harder to "find" the light eventually. Won't run with the side stand down without the light.

I was also motivated to fix it by a leaky water pump that has to be removed in the process.

Hardest part of the job is removing the coolant tube!!

My Standard does the same thing (very annoying). My I/S will go green the millisecond I shift. Personally I'm too lazy to mess with, just start with the stand up and clutch in. Maybe one day but I doubt it. :)

One easy check is the neutral switch diode, located in the top right slot on the fuse block. Pull it and clean the terminals, might fix it. I have run into that a couple times working on bikes.

As of this weekend, my neutral light doesn't work, so I'm reading this thread.

Mightn't I find it is the bulb?

If it's just the bulb, it should start in neutral even on the side stand

Gryphon Rider

From my posting to a similar thread in 2011, I've had the same problem for many years.  When I know the bike is physically in neutral, slight downward pressure on the shift peg will make the light go on.

Replacing the switch requires draining the coolant and oil, removing the front cover (where the oil filter is). The switch is on the inside of that cover.

It does  :cooldude:

What it doesn't do is start in gear with the clutch in... it was demonstrated to me this
weekend that the cause of that is my worn bushing in my clutch lever...

slight downward pressure on the shift peg will make the light go on.

I fiddled with that a little, didn't seem to do anything...

It also requires buying a used one  :o

Or buy a used one from a GW GL1500 which has more wires for N-2-3-4-5. I did. Just waiting for time to do the job.

That's the only kind I have

Good to know they can still be had...

My bike was doing this. Paid big $$ for the switch to be replaced (not easy), and it still did it.

Found the problem on the right side of the engine. After doing a valve adjust I pinch the wires when putting the valve cover back on. All has been fine after sorting that out.

Hope this helps.

What I'm going to do to swap out to a GW switch.
