This might seem kind of strange. In that I've consumed a few beers at this point. But as I was sitting here in my 8 man tent with my wife laying on the inflatable queen bed posting her stuff on Facebook, in the High Sierras. Long away from the blistering desert of the Mojave Desert, it just hit me like a lightening bolt. I am a very privileged man. Life has dealt some setbacks but I've been very lucky. I relate my life to my Dad's life probably because like most of us I looked up to him my entire life. He was by no means a perfect man but he was the best dad he could have been. Anyway, I'm sitting here with the love of my life on a trip on a beautiful motorcycle. Seeing beautiful country , doing fun things (for old people anyhow), thinking this is the life my Dad would have loved ! And to think that I could be 11,000 up a mountain telling you guys about it, well we've come along ways and I'm blessed to be a proud American.

Yes, you are one lucky one.   The Great Outdoors, always reminds us to slow down and realize how good life can be........if only we take the time to remind us.

A really nice post. Thank you.

Just a little update ! We were awoken about 4:45 to the sound of my trailer getting slammed around. In my grogginess I'm thinking why is someone trying to steal my trailer ? Then about the time I got the door open it dawned on me it was a bear. I have a cooler mount on the trailer and use it for ice and water traveling in the desert. I had taken the waters out and it was empty. I just left in on there with the bungees draped over it. He was trying to steal my cooler but one of the bungees caught in the handle as he was trying to run. He kept pulling at it banging the tongue up and down. All this time I'm 20 ft. away in my shorts and no shoes . I step out and start yelling at the bastard to get out. In casually turns away, as I'm assessing the cooler and trailer he came around the side of me and walked by the window in our tent as my wife was looking at it, as she tells it "eye to eye". Keep in mind it's pretty dark and you could hear him better than you could see him. So then he proceeds to attack coolers and storage compartments on RV's down the lane of campers. I'm sure by the time we get back home the story is going to evolve into my wife saving us from the bear with her plastic fork from McDonalds. It was pretty exciting.  Smiley

That sounds a little hairy!  Good thing that bear took your bluff.  If he'd been thinking, "Bring it, let's roll" it could have been even more exciting!

Great OP BTW.   cooldude

Meathead...great post. I can certainly appreciate where you're coming from with respect to your thoughts and also respect and agree with the fact that  you and others should feel blessed to be a proud American....I feel the same way about how fortunate our generation is and that  we too as Canadians should feel blessed to live where we live.

I have to wonder though.....you're 11,000 ft up a mountain in a tent with the  love of your life, surrounded by beautiful country on a trip with your beautiful motorcycle far removed from the normalities of daily life.....and you're on your computer talking to this bunch???   Cheesy Wink Wink

Man!  I hate the thought of being face to face with a bear, That's why I have this, it's designed to change a bear's mind very quickly!  You were blessed that hungry beast wasn't any MORE hungry

This is one of resort towns where everybody hikes, bikes and is healthy and trim. Even the Bears. I've got too much fat on me for these Mammoth Lakes Grizzlies .  Smiley

I'm just glad to see the story posted by you instead of some bear posting what a great country it is where dinner comes out to tell you there's no beer in the cooler.

Sounds like you're having a high time indeed.    cooldude

2funny We are indeed. Just got back from a good Chinese dinner and a nice 20 mile ride overlooking the Sierras at a nice 65*. I think Brenda is resigned to staying awake on bear duty tonight. I can sleep thru just about anything. She will wake me when things get exciting.  Smiley My biggest concern is surviving the Mojave Desert tomorrow .

Wow! close call glad you are OK. My wife and I had that happen to us in Yosemite Nat  park in 1967.I was driving a 63 Ford Galaxy XL 500 conv. and towing my 66 Norton. We tent camped with our food in a ice cooler. At night a bear broke open the cooler and got away with our food the attacked my Norton to get in the saddle bags. Before he left the bike was on its side and the handle bars were bent bad.  I had to straighten them in the car bumper so I could ride. This happened before they had bear proof trash dumpsters and bear were all over the place. Like you lucky no one was hurt.

Back in the 70s upper Michigan primitive campsite we had to boat to access. Had a good steel Coleman cooler with a plastic bottom. Let just say had to go back to my pickup and into town for another cooler and more vittles. RIDE SAFE.

Enjoy your ride meathead. Sounds like fun.

Stay safe.

It's often these times to reflect...and stories that have nothing to do with riding...that make riding so bloody worth it.
