I came up with a good tip on our trip out around Colo. And want to post it but we all must have good tips and they should be shared with all so we all maybe able to learn something new or something better to help us on our journeys. What I learned is, ice for a cooler. We have a Colman cooler (qt.size unkown) it has a 24 "width. You need to raise cats for this. Get 2 jugs of tidy cat litter with a screw on cover, rinse out the jugs and fill an inch from the top with cover loose make ice. These should fit in on one side of the cooler. Get a short pail of tidy cat litter and clean the inside out, take the handle off and place on the other side of the cooler aind use it to put your food in plus pop and it'll stay dry. On day 3 in the afternoon we still had some ice left but was at a Walmart store so i got a block of dry ice which was about 2x8x8 which slid right between the pails of ice. After that was used up I cut the top on one jug on 3 sides and let out some of the water in the jug and placed the bag in the jug. We did not open the cooler every second and our cooler stayed cold enough for 9 days. The cooler was kept in a car and we had 2 100deg. days. The dry ice note was close to $9 which was twice the price as years ago.

Couldn't help but think of this sketch from a 90's British comedy show called 'The Fast Show' when I first saw this thread (ignore the foreign subtitles) http://youtu.be/Y5ZcwxtHGKc

I camped a lot in cold weather.
I have to pee at night, and do not like getting up and out of a warm bag.
I found a wide mouth canteen came in really useful. (The camper's bed pan)
Years later, with a wife around... she wouldn't drink from ANY canteen.
Plus, she thought since she always had to get up and out, I should too. What convoluted thinking.
I offered her the canteen, but she just got angry.

My tips:
When choosing where to set up your tent, envision where the water will pool/flow if it starts pouring rain, and figure where the shade will be if you want to sleep after sunrise. This is more important the farther north you are, as the sun rises earlier.
If people are likely to be walking around your tent at night, tie something white (like a plastic grocery bag) to your tent strings so people don't trip over them.
At a rally, bring ear plugs so you can sleep.

Equally important in motels and aircraft.

<<< Spent years camping at the Army's convenience and discretion. Got good enough at it that I figured out, I'm not a camper. If it involves a tent or sleeping under the stars, I'd rather not. For those that like that kind of thing, enjoy it. I'll be in the RV. Edited: I do use the ice trick to keep my frig cold while I'm traveling from one site to another. It helps keep the turkey I've shot cold.

You can't have to many tarps, you can't have too much rope, carabiners make rope & tarp much easier, always bring the fireplace tongs, the bug spray goes in the tool bag, the buttwipe goes in an empty plastic coffee can, don't bust up/open bagged ice, it'll last longer, rock salt in cooler will let water get below 32°, firewood's free if you carry a bow saw (& don't mind to work alittle), only cut dead standing (it will be nice & dry even after it jus' rained), lay firewood in 3 & 3's (first 3 parallel to direction of wind for easy starting) & you can keep a fire going through a monsoon.

Another thing about ice is if you have old plastic water bottles fill them up with water and freeze them and if need water while camping, just take some out to drink and leave the ice in there to melt some more. Another 1/2 gallon jug or 1 gallon plastic jug of a milk container (depending on the size of your cooler) also works well putting in the freezer 2-3 days ahead of a camping trip. I'm too tight with my money to waste money on spending it on a 2-3 dollar block of ice in a plastic bag. Water at home being pretty much free in a plastic jug or 2-3 of them works well for a few days of camping, plus you have cold water to drink as well pouring some out at a time. I also do that for my fishing cooler freezing 1-2 days ahead of time a 1/2 gallon plastic milk jug with water. Beats wasting 2-3 bucks when each fishing trip costs like 20 bucks in gas alone. Good idea on the dead trees/brush around to burn for firewood as well, just don't let in state parks the snippy park rangers catch you doing it, they want you to buy their firewood for 5-6 bucks or more per night. In WI you have to live very close (like 40-50 miles or something like that) within your camping trip area to bring your own firewood with you to camp and has been that way for years now something I think about the gypsy moths or some other bug that destroys other trees. Not sure how they would enforce that at your campsite though? Camping is not cheap anymore. It use to be even in WI state parks in the 90's like 5 for non electric and 8 bucks for electrical campsite going up to 7 and 10 later in the 90's. Now, our daughter just went camping at a WI state park and is NOW over 30 bucks per night to camp. Gee, for 50 bucks more you can stay at a hotel with a shower/bathroom, etc.. And yet the WI DNR, etc. states they are in a deficit?

Here's more.
Avoid kicking skunks.
If using (old) outhouses, look for black widows and brown recluse before sitting. A flashlight is helpful. Avoid looking straight down.

Serious advice, about those coolers: Years ago on an ATVing and camping holiday Buddy and I had near identical cargo trailers and coolers with ice blocks. One cracking hot summer day going into the cooler for a bevvie I noted that the outside of that cooler, the plastic shell was very warm to the touch. Can't be good I reasoned. I started the practice to wrap the cooler in one of those aluminized sheets, the kind that come all folded up in a billfold size packet. I noted that now the cooler's shell stayed cool itself, and from that day forward my ice lasted twice as long as buddies. Just sayin'.
I keep some in the truck too, for when I go shopping and I have cold stuff that has to spend time in the hot vehicle. Lay one of those space blankets out and wrap the stuff that has to stay cold, and it will stay cold or frozen for a long long time.

Just to stir the bucket, like oil and car tire discussions: Should the melted ice water be drained from the cooler or not? Ok, I'll bite. Not until the ice/water ratio goes below 50%.

If the liquid water is still cold and you don't have food/other items in the cooler that will go bad either taste or spoil wise touching water, leave the water in the cooler is my best guess, but don't need tons of it. Once liquid water warm or not cold anymore, get rid of it since it will only will melt the ice even quicker.

Well here you go. Your food will stay cooler - but your buns might be soggier - if you leave the water in.

Rumor has it that as of next season we are going to be banned from bringing any firewood into the GSMNP. Hafta buy theirs, & if you get caught they make you pack out & leave. I started the practice to wrap the cooler in one of those aluminized sheets, the kind that come all folded up in a billfold size packet. Thanks, jus' got added to my saddle bag
