Two weeks ago in my little neck of the woods in South Bend Indiana we had what our local government calls a "Millennial Flood". We received over 8 inches of rain in less than 24 hours which caused extensive flood damage to my local neighborhood. Andrea and I were blessed to have minimal issues but many friends and neighbors essentially lost nearly everything they own and as this area is not in a flood plane, most if not all are un-insured. These are working class folks with jobs, keep their places up nice, people like you and me.
In trying to help out as best I can I got hooked up with a team of veterans this weekend from an organization called Team Rubicon.
http://teamrubiconusa.org/ I had never heard of them before but they are a group of veterans and some civilians with emergency services backgrounds that just go into a disaster area and get to work doing whatever tasks need to be done. We have had a steady flow of politicians and local officials visiting and doing some blah, blah, blah lip service but these folks just hit the neighborhood and got to work. I was blessed to be able to help a little gutting a house, taking out all the drywall and removing all the nails from the studs, taking out floors, etc. so the first stage of recovery can begin. (Drying out)
The team of about 15 individuals is only here for a week but they are angels to these people in need. I cannot say enough how impressed I am with them. Just thought I would pass the information along.
