Just got back from a nice little ride North into Amish country. On the last leg of the ride I realized this was the first time this year I'd had the Valk out on the gravel roads. Guess I'm getting too lazy to clean her up after those kind of rides.

I always get a bang out of riding the Valk places people don't expect to see a motorcycle. A few years ago it was a Taxidermist shop way back in the woods with chickens outside feasting on animal remains and guys in bloody bibs standing outside wondering WTH I was doing there. Until they saw the antlers sticking out of the trash-bag on my passenger seat and realized I wasn't that out of place after all. The taxidermist was really talented, he lived with his American Indian wife in a log home they built back in the woods at the end of a steep, single lane gravel drive. That was a few years ago but I still smile about it sometimes. It was wintertime too of course but there wasn't any snow on the ground. He's left this world now. He lost his life under a tree while cutting firewood a few years ago.

Today, it was an Amish store at the dead end of a gravel road with horses, buggies and trucks parked in front but no motorcycles till I arrived. I grabbed 10lbs of bulk packed bacon, half a roll of pepper-jack cheese and a couple pounds of butter. Then it was a short 30 miles of two lane twisty rural highways, a couple of 4-way stops and a little bit of gravel road. I even got home before the butter completely melted. The ride home was a great time for a quick prayer of thanks to my maker for the beauty unrolling in front of my handlebars, the wife at home (still painting) and our country, Constitution and freedom.

Now my bike looks like crap and probably will until Saturday and I've got work waiting on me in the shop. Life is good.
