ok, as the subject line states i'm looking for a rheostat for an electric belt sander so I can control the belt speed.

the sander trigger swtich is only on/off, not a variable speed and for fine finishing its too fast at times and I need to slow it down for detailed/intricate work.

what I would like is something that can be wired into the power cord on a thumb/finger dial so I can work the speed as needed and not have to plug into a different source and use it to control the power to the belt sander.

in a quick search I came across an item that I can plug a power tool into it and the item has a dial on it to reduce power to adjust speed. that's an ok solution but I move around when making stuff so I'm not in a fixed position to walk to the dial and back to the spot I want to work on.

in other words I need to adjust speed on the go.

if anyone has worked with something like this or can make suggestions/recommendations it would be appreciated.

A router table speed control available from MLCS or Woodworker.com may suit your needs.

I saw something similar, but that's not quite what i'm looking for, but thanks for the reply  cooldude

i'd like to find something that is similar to one of those rolling on/off switches on some light duty home extension cords or what you may find on some desk or table lamps.

I don't think you can use a simple rheostat for AC motor speed control. More along the lines of a pulse width modifier or variable frequency drive. But I am not an electrician.

I would think something like this should work.
