a leak

Had my girl out for a ride yesterday and stopped to enjoy the view. The leaves are starting to change  color here in my part of the country and it caused me to think of the ones who have served to protect this great country we live in, well that is another story on its on. I noticed a drop or two of gear oil on the outside part of my rear wheel. I had the wheel off to do the splines and I changed oil in the final drive. Did I do something  to cause this? All ideas are welcome.

How did you determine how much oil to pour into the drive?  Did you tighten the fill and drain plugs?  Did you clean any mess up really good because if not as the drive gets hot there will be a couple drops come off it.

Did you remove the final drive and drive shaft or just leave it in place and loosen the four bolts holding the drive to the swing arm?

I read it took 150cc of oil but it ran out the fill hole slightly before the final part of 150 was put in. I left final drive in place. The drain was tightened with a torqe wrench and the fill plug was tightened to what felt good. I cleaned everything as best as I could. It only leaks after the oil is warmed up.

I thought I had a leak once, I took the final drive off to look.

It was just some goo leaking from the groove where the
fill plug is. The only real other place to leak is the big
seal on the back, mine was fine, I reckon you'd see a
problem there easily if you had your wheel off and access
to the back...

So... hopefully your "leak" is just goo that had collected in
that groove...

Yes... if it is the seal, you've got trouble (the seal is easy to replace actually).

If it is just goo from the filler plug groove, there's only so much of that
that can drip out before it is all gone...

Two things:

1. If you didn't have the four bolts that secure the drive to the swingarm loose when you torqued the axle nut, then I would not trust the wheel to drive alignment.

2. If 150 cc would not go in then you didn't get all the old oil out.  Additionally, if the bike was on the side stand when you filled it, it is now overfilled.
