So the wife has decided that she no longer wants to do the cross-country trips on the bike with me... Which, she wasn't always 100% into it, but she IS the reason I traded my Valk for the Goldwing (attempting to make her more comfortable). But, now I sit here with a Goldwing for solo cross-country trips, which is WAY overkill. I can pack 2 weeks of supplies in one saddlebag... So, I'm thinking of trading the Goldwing for something less. I may even go a completely different direction and get the new Honda Africa Twin or Yamaha Super Tenere instead of a cruiser/tourer... the added suspension travel will be a big bonus on these crappy Louisiana Roads (which are only "roads" in the sense that they were once smooth... now they are more pot-hole than asphalt). The big question is how bad am I going to lose my @$$ on trade-in???? The Wing is a 2014 (all black) with 20K miles on it (completely stock). What do you guys think it's worth? I'll have to look at my last payment to remember how much I still owe on it.

There's an advanced search option on ebay where you can see what actually sold, and what was paid for it. When I look there, it makes me think your bike is worth between 13 and 15 K ...

Have read several articles in Cycle World and RevZilla proclaiming the Africa Twin as an all around good ADV bike for the money ($13,000) as compared with BMW and KTM models. It's been out everywhere else for years but the USA and Honda has finally brought them over here. There's even a six speed, dual clutch, auto tranny model that was given a good going over during a road test by the pros with a thumbs up on the performance end. 94 HP, 70 ft.lbs torque, and a wet 510 lbs. seems a decent match for off pavement.
Has anyone test driven one? Hoping to if the opportunity presents itself, (meaning the local Honda dealer may/may not have one in stock).

There's a used one in Prescott, AZ on craigslist. It has $1000 extra in bags and a larger windshield. Asking $12,300. 3K mileage.

Do your due dlligence on the Yamaha. The early ones I remember reading about in ADV rider as having some issues that made the owners go a different route. Sorry, this writer cannot remember the details for you. There was a brand new Africa Twin with all the bells and whistles for sale in Craigslist somewhere in Va. as I remember a couple weeks ago.

The African Twin is not all it's cracked up to be either according to Adv riders forum. Can't believe all the reviews. Good luck!

pretty sure you will get more selling outright vs. trading in but maybe not saving on the sales tax on trade in value of guessing around 13K, if going with a new or used cycle at a dealer?
I always kept wanting to sell my vehicles outright but say at 20K trade in times 5.5% sales tax is OVER 1 grand in value you would have to sell it more for outright just to break even on trading it in on a new vehicle at the dealer.
Up to you, but a wing is more comfy than most other bikes you are thinking of buying unless into that off roading riding type. Some of us are getting to old to be doing much off roading anymore.
last time I tried downhill skiing some 10 years ago I did a very small jump not going fast enough and front of skis dug in and went head first into the snowbank ahead taking off 1/2 my skin on my face shaving it badly of skin bleeding all over. Was the last time for me and I was in my 30's at the time even.

Yamaha Super Tenere` - The first two production years (`12 & `13) a problem that surfaced on occasion was the Cam Chain Tension device. There were a couple catastrophic failures that I recall reading about, repaired under warranty. The simple follow-up fix is to upgrade the CCT parts and clutch basket using the parts listed for `14 model year and later. I rode the 2012 Tenere for a year then transferred ownership to my kid. He has 40k miles on the bike with zero problems. He plans to do the upgrade at the next valve adjust interval (50k). Tenere is a solid machine. It didn't work for me and mine as a two-up bike. If I was a solo rider I would have kept it. Yrmv,

These are street legal... There's probably good places to ride them near the Cherohala, I've seen some of them there... -Mike

Ha, if I could get one other bike, the Ducati Diavel is surely on that short list.

That GL 1800 is one sweet ride. I know, I have one in my stable of 4 bikes. I'm willing to bet that if you sell it, you will probably buy another in the next few years. They are bullet proof, have an incredibly smooth ride, and have fuel injection.

Sounds like your wing is an equal trade with my 99 green/tan IS.... She is not even broken in yet, only 69k on her...with a new ATT on the rear end... Let me know if you are interested!

Possibly, but it would require major road repairs around my area first. Almost every road between me and work is washboard... Then the city fills all the potholes with asphalt and makes it WORSE. All that plastic on the Wing rattles like crazy. I've already had the trunk lid replaced... rough roads caused the hinge to break in half. If I don't go "Adventure" style (which would be done only for the longer travel suspension), I'll probably get a new 1800 Valk and put Corbin Bags on it.

Honda ST1300 7.2 gallons and 40+mpg Detachable saddlebags. They are big. Adjustable windshield. Rode mine for 135,000 miles. Never had to adjust the valves Easy to change air filter. Great forum for any needed tech help. And it zooms right along

^^^^^^^ As much as I like the looks of the ST (especially the new 1300), I'm looking for something that can smooth out these horrible roads around Lafayette, LA.
I even looked at the new Yamaha SCR900 (scrambler)... but the back end has less than 3 inches of travel. These roads need a minimum of 4 or 5 inches to not bottom out (or throw your back out) on RR Crossings.

What about the Triumph Tiger XR or XCA? May only be 800 cc but they can haul ass and are around 14K.

I do LOVE that Triumph Triple engine... (I have a 2004 TBS as a "toy" bike)... But hate the style of the new Tigers (why is the "angry insect" and "duck-bill front fender" look so darn popular???). The XR version isn't too bad... I may have to drop by the Triumph Dealer to see if they have one in stock. Unfortunately, the closest dealer is 2.5 hours away. Honda is half an hour... Yamaha is one hour.
