bought a flag and a mount for it next to my front door yesterday when I was at Lowes

Is taking it down at dusk and putting it back up when I awaken in the morning correct or should it always be out?

My guts tell me up at dawn and down at dusk

I am sure many members will be all over this one.

What he said. Yesterday I left mine at half staff til midnight. When I mounted mine to the door frame I got rid of the wimpy 3/4 inch long wood screws that came with the mount and replaced with some inch and a half long SERIOUS wood screws. My second flag since I retired is AMERICAN Made. The individual stripes are sewed together and the stars are embroidered on. Sorry to say my first flag was chinese and printed!  uglystupid2 When it comes time to replace It drop it off at the V F W or the American Legion. Here in Willow Springs they dispose of them PROPERLY about every other month or so. Evan my friend-Please do not dispose of an old tired Flag yerself. I remember right after 9/11-seemed as if 90% of the folks across our Nation had a Flag up. Lotsa truckers had American Flags on their big rigs-including me! Evan-you can get a Flag etiquette pamphlet at either the V F W or the American Legion post closest to you. They are More than HAPPY to help. RIDE SAFE.

I may be mistaken but:

After further checking a flag does not have to be lighted directly by a spot or flood light. It may be indirectly lighted by a porch or any outside illumination.  As long as it can be seen at night weather by direct or indirect  lighting it is acceptable.

Evan, yes, if it flying at night, it is supposed to be illuminated.  Also faded or torn flags should be replaced. The old flag can be given to the AL, VFW, or other vet organizations for proper disposal.

As I posted about a week ago about the lady who sells flags here in New Haven, I buy from her, I will NOT buy a flag made in China.  Cheap and The government of China is our enemy.

My flags have the stars embroidered and are high quality. They hold up well, are expensive but are made by an old USA flag company.

Yep... Mine is near my outside security light. Not a spot light but is always visible. Keep'em flying.

I have a street light across the street and one door down that keeps my Flag Illuminated at night. Since lightning took out the elm tee the light keeps Old Glory lit up rather Nicely. My neighbor Ed-guy cutting my grass whilst I'm laid up-has the Stars and Bars on his Hacienda. AND Nobody has complained to either one of us bout our choices of Flags we fly. Both Flags represent AMERICAN History and neither one should EVER be forgotten or Mistreated. IF either one of these Flags piss you off MAYBE a geographical relocation to another country should be considered. RIDE SAFE.

Good on you. Also they don't fly in the rain.
These super Americans with the flag mounted in the back of the pick-up, dirty, torn and limp in the rain really chap me.
I was, again, the only house on the block flying old Glory.
I have two flag mounts. one at 45 degrees and one at 90 degrees.
The 45 always has the American flag and the other has various flags.
Yesterday the "Twin tower memorial flag" flew in concert.
Its a single star, surrounded by a pentagon and three white stripes, with two red ones.

I wasn't aware of not having them up in the rain. If it starts raining you are supposed to lower the flag ?

Don't "know" if it's required but foul weather sees me brining my Flag in. Add high wind(s) will see The Flag brought in. Treat your Flag better than you treat your Motorcycle. RIDE SAFE.

I don't play an expert on TV or anything, but as I recall, if its raining you must bring it in.

I wasn't trying to be a smartass or anything. I just had never heard that it wasn't supposed to be up in the rain. The only thing I really know is what I learned in Boot Camp. I just remember its supposed to be raised quickly at dawn and lowered slowly at dusk. If left up its supposed to be lit up. But my memory is not as sharp as it once was. (It was never that great to begin with)

When my son was in scout camp (a few years ago) We had the VFW come up and retire about 15 flags It was a somber scene. The scouts, young and old got very quiet, The adults all had tears in their eyes.

Mine is on a full size telescoping pole from Harbor Freight (affordable) and a solar powered pole mounted light is also available from Harbor Freight. Good inexpensive set up, full size flag.
I burn my old flags in a backyard fire pit ceremony, respectfully.

I believe if I remember right  (I have CRS) no flag is supposed to be attached to any vehicle?

O2S...I don't believe it pertains to those ocassions. I believe it pertains to someone just throwing it on a vehicle and driving it around day after day in all kinds of weather. I understand a person doing this out of pride for our country but IMHO it should be done with taste and respect.  Funerals and the like are exempt for a lack of better words. That's how I remember it. I put them on my fire trucks during parades like Labor Day and especially Memorial Day.  I'm proud of what it stands for and the respect shown by my personnel.

I read the vehicle attachment under I believe "flag etiquette" l will see if I can look it up again. Again, I believe the way your organization uses the flag IS proper.

UPDATE:  From what I've  read in different areas the flag attached to a vehicle(s) should only be attached by a staff. I think I read that it may not be draped over any part of the vehicle like the hood, roof, or trunk. Special ocassions are proper for display. Funerals,  holidays and the like.     cooldude

Meathead,
I appreciate smartassery.
I could be wrong, maybe. There a lot of them flying in the rain.
The respect shown has decreased astonishly.
Kudos for all comments here. We must have good memories.

Thanks everyone

Even though I have a porch light, it is a motion sensor lite so I will just take the flag down at night when I come home and put it up when I get up.

Not much I can do if it rains when I am at work   coolsmiley

It is ok to display if it is an all-weather flag.
