The topic of shotgun ammo for home defense came up here a while back. In light of that I thought this might be of interest.

I don't watch the current crop of comedians.  Most aren't.

I have a 500 Mossberg in the bedroom corner but I'm not sure why. For me, a pistol makes more sense, along with a set of electronic earmuffs for firing in a closed area..  Most people think of a shotgun as a 'scatter gun" but it isn't at close range. I won't even talk about pistol grips shotguns.  They would seem to be uncontrollable.

Along the same lines, have you seen the Aquila short shells for defense?  That might make sense for capacity.

10" is 10years before you see the judge.
If the Judge had a more manly grip, I might contemplate one.
The feel in my hand is just too small for the recoil I'd expect.

The wife keeps a 12 gauge loaded with #6 shot as her main home defense firearm. At the longest possible shot distance in our house the main part of that shot charge would still be in no more than a 7" circle, probably smaller. In the face, chest, torso or upper leg, one, maybe two shots would end the fight immediately and yet over penetration would not be a factor to worry about.

A pistol might be more convenient but for someone who doesn't shoot every week or two a shotgun makes a lot of sense.

Timely post.  I am in the process of replacing the 870 Wingmaster (with 20" smooth bore slug barrel) with a Glock 19, as the home defense weapon.  The Remington is how too much for me to wheel in the house.  I've been getting out to the range twice a week to get my proficiency up with the 9mm.  So far so good...

Use the handgun .410 ammo not the shotgun stuff. Shotgun ammo will punish you, the loads made for it are quite comfortable.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

I got a single shot 12 ga behind the door. I know it has buck shot in it with some extra and slugs on the stock. Revolver on the night stand. I grab it 1st long enough to make it to my Winchester.

Had same idea, tried 'em & they're pretty much worthless in a pump gun. Too short, won't feed reliably.
They knock a nice thumb size hole in 2x4's with my break front single barrel though cooldude

I keep my 1200 in the corner of the bedroom with 00 buck. Used to use it in my cruiser, has a 22 inch barrel.  My Glock 40 is always handy with hollow points.

I really like my Rock Island Armory M5 pump.  Smooth as butter, and has a Shoulder Thing That Goes Up. Not gonna say where I keep it but it's well hidden and I can get to it in seconds.  Yeah I like 3" 00 buck; 12 .33 cal balls at 1250fps in the boiler room oughtta dispatch any diaperhead to his 72 virgins.

I have a Remington 870P with 00 Buck Shot... nice and short, with 7 shells fully loaded.
Backed up with a Ruger .45 1911.

Walls be cursed, I want maximum knock-down power.

remind me to KNOCK first going to your homes.

you all must live in a rough neighborhood/area to have a few loaded guns around all the time?   coolsmiley

1/2 the time I forget to even close the garage door at night which is really a bad thing to do in any neighborhood since Valk, scooter, and lawnmowers, etc. can easily get stolen.  Plus,  the door from garage to house is never locked.

seriously though,  one should always lock it all up every day just in case even though I leave my patio door unlocked often but is a mistake since a block away a long time ago they left it open with just a screen door and someone tried to get in at night until he woke up and tried chasing him down in the dark.

I just keep an old worn out double with the barrel cut to the end of the forearm loaded with 7.5s under the bed and  a Gold Cup in the night stand.

But, yep, both times we were burglarized was during the day when we were gone. And, they took guns.

The 'hood isn't as nice as it was when I moved in almost 20 years ago, but I know most of my neighbors by sight if not name. I don't worry about them, it is the ones that don't live here that are the issue. I am 45 miles from Chicago and 30 miles from Milwaukee (approximately) and there are gangs actively using our general area as refuge and a neutral point for the transfer of illegal drugs, guns, etc. When I lived in a more rural setting, we had to worry about break-ins by the unsavory since the sheriff could take up to 45 minutes to respond if there was no blood spilled. For some reason the criminally minded seem to think if you lived in an old house in the country, you were easy pickings. The more professional thieves would wait until the house was empty and with no one close by, take their time to load the cube truck with your belongings. In through a window unseen from the road, open the front door and appear to be on legitimate business to anyone driving by. A 10mm 1911 loaded with JHP and one in the pipe is in a biometric safe under the bed, which is bolted to the floor. The carry pistol will be in the safe downstairs when it is not on me. No weapons are ever left out when no one is home or when guests are in the house, in fact, most of the neighbors don't know I own guns although the NRA decal in the back window of my truck should give a hint. I hope to never need a gun in the middle of the night, but it is better the have it and not need it than not have it and need it. If I ever feel my ability to handle a pistol is in question, I would put a 20" barrel on the Remington 870 and have that close at hand at night loaded with #4 buckshot since the kids are all out of the house (drywall is cheap and if you are going to mess up the furniture, why go half way).

Look at coach guns in side-by-side for home defense, a perp should get goose bumps looking down the barrels of a short 12 gauge double.

I have never had my late 1980s mossberg pump 500 model jam up ever on me after 100's, if not 1000's of rounds thru it over the years.  Must be something catching or not cycling right since mine is smooth as butter for such a cheap shotgun does the job.  Only thing ever broke was they put a plastic slider safety on it from factor and that broke in 1/2 so had to put on a metal slider safety.  My brothers older mossberg 500 even cycles smoother than mine almost effortlessly.

They might be that reliable might not

My hands on shooting had both jamming including a brand new mossberg 500..... 7th shell refused to eject . Then car acted up so I can't test them again

Either way click is dead

Double barreled next

I ordered the 6.5" barrel, 3" chambered Judge in SS.  Still waiting.....2 months now.  No one can give me a ship date.  Wonder if I should get my deposit back.

 crazy2 :ticked off:

However, the main question I have is...... How effective will the Judge be due to the much shorter barrels?

It's really hard to beat a shotgun with buckshot or BBs.

I've only shot one, & not nearly as thoroughly as this gentleman, but I find this to be a pretty accurate assessment of the weapons characteristics....
(I'd get the deposit back.)

My Judge is loaded with Winchester PDX rounds.  Also have a Mossberg Chainsaw edition, Mossberg 590 persuader, UTAS-15 etc.  Love a 12 guage with 15 rounds of 2 3/4 or 13 of 3" magnum.

As far as comparing the dependability of the 870 to the Mossberg 500 I've had one 870 brought in to be repaired and no Mossberg 500's. Turned out the 870 wasn't broken, the trigger group was just too dirty to operate. I've blued/refinished several of each and prefer the Mossberg's design for ease of assembly/disassembly but it would take a lot to break either one of them I think.
