I've been having severe lower back pain recently, doing PT & steroid shots & the rest of the ball of wax.
I had decided to cancel a trip to the BRP but a few days ago my wife came home with the "TENS" device that the Aleve people have been advertising lately.
It works. I think the trip is back on.

I use one regularly for my bad lower back too(bad disk). It does help. I thought it was quackery but my chiropractor put me on one every time I went to him so I bought my own.
A coworker has had had bad muscle spasming in his lower back for years, only way he could sleep was if he took a handful of drugs and he still hasn't had a decent sleep in years. He spent a fortune on chiropractors and massages. I lent him my machine and he said he hasn't taken a pill since. He said on the weekends he sleeps about 12 hours now just because he can. He ordered his own now. For a $100-200 machine, it's worth a try.
One more thing that really helps...bought an Ultimate seat set recently, that thing is amazing. Posture is much more upright, less slouchy, helps the back too. A lot more expensive than a TENS machine though.

I swear by an inversion table. I think it depends on your situation, but I've been afflicted by herniated discs so bad I could not function. The inversion table does wonders for me.

I tried one of those evil tables, it was like some medieval torture device. I got upside down and it felt like my lower spine was being ripped in two. Wife had to help me out of it. I've heard it help others but to me it was the devil.

I have a disk in my lower lumbar that is non-existent. My doctor saw the X-rays and said, well THERE's your problem. Too many years of throwing bales, grain bags, jumping bikes, riding ATV's, etc. He said surgery (fusing the vertebrae together) is an option but he said it's a last resort. I can do everything, I work out every day, am very active, but just moving the wrong way once will put me out of commission for a month. He said if it only happens once a year, they won't do surgery, but if it happens more and more, they will. He said if I can get to age 50 without surgery, I probably won't need it(I'm 42 now). Once the crushed disk "dries up" and no longer puts out the proteins that stimulate/irritate the nerves(or something like that), he said I'll be ok.

My specific diagnosis is Spondylolisthesis which is like yours, impinging on the nerves. My condition was caused by being cut off by a station wagon 55 years ago resulting in my left leg being 1 1/2" short causing degenerative arthritic disc disease. A surgical lumbar stenosis has been suggested but I regard it as only a last resort. However, I had cervical stenosis surgery 10 years ago that was successful.

That must be excruciating. For me the worst is being bent over doing tile work or something like that. I've been considering a bike lift just because of this. Tile jobs are out of the question for me now. I hope you can get by without the fusion. I swear by an inversion table. You guys are making me feel pretty fortunate. I was on Dilaudin for a few months years ago. I hope never to endure pain like that again.

Few things test a marriage more than being down with a bad back and your wife having to help you out of bed, put your pants/socks/shoes on you, etc. My biggest fear is having it go on me a couple thousand miles from home on a bike trip. It's a good thing I have a nice light weight bike that I won't hurt my back moving it around.

I'm glad it works for you. Judy has one for her head and neck and its really strange the sounds it makes, but she says it works. I have all kinds of pain but since I have very few feelings I can live with the pains in my lower back, lower abdomen, right arm, both shoulders and now (of course) right middle finger.

My renal cell cancer had spread to my spine. There were three masses on my spine and the pain was unbearable.
I had a bunch of radiation on my spine...the pain was reduced my a bunch....but was still there.
My oncologist prescribed me Fentanyl patches. Those things work great.
A few weeks ago, I fell on my butt/back. They called it a "burst fracture". The pain was like nothing I've ever had. My oncologist up'd my prescription on the patches....if it wasn't for those patches, I'd be screaming in pain right now.
With the Oxycodin pills and the patches, I'm good to go now.

I'm on the heating pad right now. Going to ice in a few minutes. About once a year this happens and I hate it. This time is the worst I've ever had. I'm walking like a freaking duck.
I know where mine came from. Years ago when I was a cop I tackled a guy with a shotgun in a hallway. We went through a wall and landed in a stairwell. That hurt, and was back in the 70s. 13 years ago when I got hit on the xway on my bike the guy hit me in the rear end. My back ate the front of his truck, then I landed on my back in the passing lane.
None of that has helped at all and I pay everyday.

just reading Dr Bookspan's site and following her techniques, cured my neck and back pain including numbness, spasms in lower leg and foot, all after various injuries, mainly from minor car accidents. I'm now pain free. my nephew all 350lbs of him had a budging disk, almost ruptured it, they wanted to do surgery, he followed Dr Bookspan, never had surgery and is pain free healed today. Thank God. she was actually paralyzed in a military accident, so bad the wanted to remove her legs. she used her techniques and is well today. http://www.drbookspan.com/RarePhotos.html its free info, what do u have to lose http://www.drbookspan.com/research.htmlFixing Injury and Pain Research Functional Exercise, Better Biomechanics, and Top Training My career as research physiologist took me to military, university, and training centers from undersea to mountaintop to jet cockpit. I was given the toughest assignments to find why common training and rehabilitation methods don't work, and what does. Strong brave men got hazardous duty pay just to have a day with me. Methods I developed are now learned in school by doctors, trainers, physical therapists, Navy divers, chamber operators, combat swimmers, police and military, and top athletes. Doctors and fitness instructors come to me as patients to find out why they have back and other pain and what to do about it. I pioneered functional fitness training. Click here for more on Functional Training. Click here for Appointment Info to learn top training for yourself or your groups. I was the first to develop fitness programs aboard cruise ships, and was told it would "never catch on" - photos and stories below, keep scrolling.
