Just two issues to settle...

Okay, I have had this bike now for roughly 15 months, and with nearly 7800mi. on the odometer, the engine is really coming to life.  Man, run the tank down to like a 1/4 tank, ethanol free gas...10w/30 LUCAS OIL full synthetic(this is the best oil guys for this bike man..for what I have tried) and this bike is a fricken rocket...especially once you really learn how to work it's power band and transmission...  AMAZING drive train....and handling characteristics...  However, two issues I have to settle to make this bike complete for me.

1. finding the correct height windshield. This bike is not that aerodynamic... wind blast and turbulence over 80mph just rattles your eyeballs...and glasses, head gear, etc.  Have any you solved this problem?  What did you find for your height as the correct sized windshield to eliminate the buffeting?

2. The grips.  Sometimes my throttle hand just gets prematurely numb.  How did you solve this issue?

My hand gets numb pretty fast. I slid on of the cheepie palm rests on the throttle side, and cured the problem. I have no answer for the buffeting

Adrian, You might try these to fix the grip problem. I used them on the V-Strom and F6B until I went with ISO's on the B. They're cheap, easy to install and quite comfortable. Here ya go.....http://www.shop.shinhopples.com/product.sc?productId=1067&categoryId=103

For a palm rest I like the KuryAkyn universal throttle boss. Works on most grips and will also work with the above mentioned foam covers with some stretching but not at all hard to do.

What is a 'palm rest'?

I know it shall sound oddballish, but I'm very happy with my full face helmet and sports windshield w/ wind deflector combo.

The air is pushed upwards and hits the top of my helmet, right at the intake port to keep my head cool. I also think the screen looks pretty snazzy on the bike.

It would be a nightmare if you are riding open face or skull cap.

I haven't gotten the grip/handlebar issues sorted, yet, although I improved the grips from stock with Kuryakyn ISO's and a CrampBuster.  I think the angle of the grips only bothers me because the bars are just a bit too far forward and you can't adjust the damn things except by rotation. 

However, I have totally fixed the windshield problem, and I'll post that as a new topic in Tech.  Madstad worked with me and they did a fantastic job and deserve their own post.  If you're looking for a quick and easy fix, though, installing those small tabs at the base of the stock windshield does a pretty decent job.

Top of shield eye level for me.

Do you look over the top of the shield, or is the shield slightly above you line of sight? Or does the top of the shield run directly through the middle of your line of sight?

Installing the Oxford heated grips gave slightly increased diameter that helped with fatigue.
Using the boulevard shield lets clean airstream flow at shoulders and helmet to avoid buffeting, but at the expense of less protection.
More air works fine for me.

Hey AdrianR, I changed oil and went with the Lucas oil.  I am very impressed with the results. I've used a couple other brands and so far, I agree with you, best I have used. Smmmmoooooooothe is all I can say.

So you can notice the diff too eh?...That's great man.   I know there are some people that think oil really makes no difference in performance...  well their wrong as IT DOES... Did you also notice how it revs faster?  So far I have tried Valvoline's 10/40w petroleum based *motorcycle* oil, Honda's 10/30w full synthetic oil, Castrol's racing 4T 10/40w full synthetic oil, and Amsoil's 10/30w full synthetic oil.  The Lucas Oil really outperforms all them quite noticeably...  The bike is faster with the 30w oil btw as well....

Adrian you know how my bike is set up and I have not had buffeting except on very rare occasions with the Honda OEM windshield. My eyes just looks over the top if I straighten up in the seat. We have some pretty good cross winds here and I have not had that kind of problem. 

As for the numbing issue I still deal with it on occasion but if I wear gloves I usually dont have a problem. If you get some gloves like weight lifter gloves with padding in them you should be ok.

With 9 different shield sizes to choose from, you can find your prefect fit.  I have the 8" and have been considering adding a 12" for cooler weather.

For the hand cramps, you get either a CrampBuster or a ThrottleRocker, I won't leave home without one (seriously!  When I went in vacation and rented a bike I brought my TR along!)

Next, you need a throttle lock.  Since I'm running heated grips I went to GoCriuse

You could consider some gel gloves; I had a similar problem when I was doing a lot of bicycle riding, and have not had an issue since getting the gel in the palm gloves.

I have Honda's short windshield.  Very happy with it, but I'm only 5'6".  All I want is something to knock the blast off my chest.
