A friend moved down about a month ago, doing the same thing I'm planning. He bought a house in Atoka. He likes it so far...

Anyone familiar with that area?

LOL...pull up a map of Tennessee and zoom in on the Memphis Intl Airport. Look at the road running east/west just north of the airport....priceless.  cooldude cooldude
i used to work out of atoka, not a bad place, close to millington naval base,, but to close to memphis for me...

A naval base in Tennessee? I'll have to check that out.....

Ahhh.....Millington!
A year or so ago I flew Southwest up to Memphis while Lesa was up there with her Mom.
Horrendous weather over the airport and we were circling for a bit. Aircraft straightened out and began it's decent again and as usual I was watching the scenery as we landed. Flashing past the window was a large hangar with the name " Millington Municipal Airport! "
We were low on fuel. Had to land somewhere and the Navy flies in and out of Miliington. We fueled up from a small truck that had to go and refuel itself after filling a larger 4 engine Navy Jet. Took almost two additional hours to get to Memphis.

North of Memphis an hour or so is mostly farmland. The Delta area surrounding the Mississippi. Lesa is from that area. One thing about the farmland in that area. It is massive and  they spray a wicked strong defoliant on the millions of acres of cotton. Have been there during that and all I can say is that if anyone in your family has breathing issues.....look elsewhere. The smell is wicked strong and you instantly know or have a feeling that it is anything but good for you.

Got it!
As for that smell though.....heavy styrene-like smell to it. Lesa says a bunch of folks end up with breathing problems during the several weeks they spray. Of course Monsanto says "Nothing to see here, folks"
She is very happy to have left that part of West Tn. behind.

My grandparents lived adjacent to a cotton field in the Rio Grande Valley. My brother and I had many a war out there flinging hard cotton bulbs at each other. There were many times the crop duster would come by and spray right over us. Probably contributed to much of my brain damage.  2funny I can still smell that distinctive odor 50 years later.

Chattanooga is not bad, just get ready for summer heat and humidity. Lots of good mountain riding nearby once you get away from the city traffic.  I've lived here all my life but planning on moving to Crossville (Lake Tansi) Tn next year when my wife retires.  Already got my Park Model and golf cart. LOL.  Cheesy Blake

A couple of things:

Downtown Memphis has some nice places to visit:
Overton Park and Zoo
Pink Palace
Mud Island

You may have noticed the state flag has 3 stars on it.
At one time those represented the 3 "states" of Tennessee.
East - Mountains
Middle - Rolling hills
West -  Plains

Some wrong headed politician decide that was negative and for quite a few years now the 3 "states" of Tennessee has been not politically correct.

LOL.  Me and both my brothers were born at the Navy hospital in Millington and lived there for two tours of duty.  Both of my boys were born in the Keys.

My Navy "A" school was at Millington Tn. Learned my trade as applicable to military A/C at Millington. Spent some time in Memphis then and enjoyed sight seeing and the food BUT that was in 1964. RIDE SAFE.

The defoliant is better known a. "Agent Orange".

My old man was an "A" school instructor from 1960-1964.
