Question for you gentlemen. My wife and I are considering relocating to Tennessee sometime in the next few years. I work for that big freight outfit that calls Memphis home.

I know next to nothing about that area and I'm starting my research. We're looking for semi-rural where we can pickup 3-5 acres, away from developed areas. I'd like to be 45-60 mins from Memphis.....

I'm really looking forward to the beautiful riding as evidenced in Joes latest post.

Any advice will be appreciated....

Memphis is on the Mississippi side, that's pretty far from where Joe rides.
Mac led a bunch of us there once, on a road (100) south of I40... it was
real nice country as I remember, no mountains. Memphis is a trafficky mess, but 45
to 60 minutes away would get you plenty out into the country.

I had a wicked funny liberal/masshole remark all typed out.  2funny
But, I'll keep it to myself. We enjoyed a pretty good BBQ meal together in WV.,
and that walker pic was funny!

Check out Jonesboro AR. Many Fred Smith executives and pilots live there.

60 mile commute away from heavy traffic with good riding throughout Crowley's Ridge.

X 2

Worked in Memphis for several years, lived in South Haven, Mississippi, then moved to Cold Water, Mississippi.   Chose that area to stay away from Memphis.     Personally, given the opportunity, I'd pass next time solely based on Memphis and not where I chose to live.   All three states bordering Memphis have good and not so good things.   I choose where I did based on taxes (at the time) and roads that got me where I needed to go and schools for my kids.    I'm not fond of "river towns".    You know it's eventually gonna flood.

West Tennessee is nothing like east Tennessee. You couldn't give me a 100 acres down that way and expect me to live there. Anything east of Cookeville is good anything west of there we call the " dirty side " .

Frasier in Southeast Tennessee

« Reply #12 on: September 26, 2016, 06:44:19 AM »

Memphis is the A$$hole of Tennessee. Highest crime rate in Tennessee.
Many Tennesseans will not admit it is in Tennessee,
We have tried to give it to Arkansas and Mississippi they have been to smart to take it.
Although the BBQ is good.

In Tennessee locate as far north or east of Memphis as you can.
North Mississippi is also nice, not to close to Memphis.

Years ago I liked and spent quite a bit of time in Memphis. I no longer go there and route my travel around it if possible.

Good luck with you search.

If you find some place 40 to 60 miles out it will be good. There are a lot of good people in West Tennessee. Everyone can't live in Joe's part of the Great State of Tennessee.

As has been stated. Memphis is in the corner of Tennessee on the edge of both Mississippi and Arkansas.

If you want to live in a rural or very small town setting within 50 or 60 miles, Arkansas is likely your best chance but the travel into and out of Memphis is a mess in that direction.  You can find rural spots to live on the Tennessee side but you'll have to work harder at it.

My heart goes out to people who have to live in Memphis.

Ill list a few good things about Memphis, Beale street, great ribs at the Rendezvous, A guy at the gotf swears a place called Gus's has the best fried chicken on earth, Sun records. Now the bad Memphis has the kind of violence that most normal people aren't prepared to deal with.

Thank you to all the replies. They reinforce what I've heard about the area.

I'm going down there for training pretty soon, and I'm told it's not a good idea to leave your hotel room at night....

I hadn't thought about Arkansas, I'll have to check that out. I like to have a 45-60 minute commute, plenty of time to enjoy a good ride....

A few years ago, I saw a real estate ad selling a property somewhere in TN. It was very long and narrow, with a grass strip runway. A good sized house with a hangar below, big enough to fit 4 planes easily. There was also a guest house at the other end of the property. I think it was listed at $250000...

From the direction I was talking about you could get into the country in 45-60
minutes, but it wouldn't be a good ride, it would be escaping horrible traffic.

If you had to go to Arkansas, you'd  have to cross one of the bridges over the
Mississippi River, there's not all that many I don't think...

I-40-E and I-55-S come together in Arkansas cross the Mighty Mississippi and choke down to ONE and Only ONE lane shortly after you cross the river. It has been known to back up at OH dark thirty. 40-W and 55-N leaving Tn. has the same one lane deal going out.  I drove truck into and out of Memphis a lot. Want a real horror story?? Try U S 78 South and East outa Memphis or U S 78 North and West into Memphis. Pretty good stretch of I-55 outa Memphis into Mississippi and outa Mississippi into Memphis CAN and WIL be Royal PAINS in the cheeks. Damn glad I retired when I did-company I was working for wanted me to relocate to Memphis!  uglystupid2 NOT in my lifetime!  crazy2 RIDE SAFE.

Baldo--good luck with your relocation.  Not very encouraging from what others have said, but there has to be a decent area somewhere in Memphis that would not require a 60 minute commute.  Try the chamber of commerce.

Luck.

We do not claim it and Mississippi will not take it.
We tried to call it West Memphis so that Arkansas would take it, but they saw through that.

It is a shame it was a great town many years ago. Most of the good folks moved out to the east that is why that area is so nice

Good luck Baldo.

Hey guys not to hijack this thread but I too am looking at relocating the hell out of NC and over to TN in a few (hopefully) short years to retire for good.  Looking at a small town outside of knoxville called Maryville.  Sits right at the base of the Smokeys, college town it looks like.  Anybody know anything about that area of TN?

Very good area, close to airport (Alcoa), lot of good country folks, years back it was farm country. If you want to stay close to big city, but not close, it might be for you. It is growing toward Knox and Knox is growing toward Maryville, becoming metro. Go about an hour further west from Knox. on top of Cumberland Plateau is my smaller hometown, Crossville. I-40 runs through it. Nashville is hour and a half further west from here. Check it out, we can help with R.E. if you like.

Maryville is not what I would call a small town. But it is a nice town. Too bad it is so close to Knoxville. It really is like Knoxville Southeast, rather than a separate town. And traffic can sometimes be a bear.

You can roll through Maryville on Friday afternoon on 129 without
much trouble. But when you get to I40, you might as well abandon your motorcycle
and walk the rest of the way  Wink

Kinda what I was getting at, but still a nice area on the outskirts. To me, it's a big town. Where I live during the county fair, the bumper car ride only has one bumper car Wink

I live in WKy,but work the area near Memphis quite a bit. Their are a lot of nice areas to the NE of Memphis, small towns and good people. The riding is very good also, no mountains but some very good back roads with lots of curves and good scenery. You do have to be careful in the spring and fall because of the farm equipment. Good luck with your move! When you get here let me know and I will show you around West Tn.& West Ky.
