When I was in A&P school, we tore an old Jacobs engine down and rebuilt it, then ran and T/S instructor-induced problems. Also how to dope and fabric control surfaces, etc. The instructors said we'd never need to do this once we graduated. My first job was with an airline with 12 DC-3's and R-1830's... :o :o

The first video is a day in Provincetown, in the dunes at the tip of the Cape.

The second is the last day of operations. We had a flyby all around the Cape. I was in the Cessna taking pictures. I'll post them if I can find em.

Love those old radials. We live below the pattern of the local GA strip and when an old round one takes off I can tell. My wife just looks at me, shakes her head and sometimes gives me a pat on the head as she walks away. She maintains if she stuck a muffler up her butt and made a sound like a motor, she'd get a lot more attention.  ;D  I spoil her every chance I get so she isn't starving for that.  ;)

Very cool. I've flown in a few Beavers. Always felt pretty safe in them no matter the circumstances.

My last flight in a DC3 was a commercial flight from Tennessee to Indy, Southern Airlines, i think, coming home on leave.

My buddy at one time worked at a small airport, Smith Field in Ft. Wayne.  He worked the pumps and turned on the runway lights.  There was a leasing company, Airgo, who had a PT trainer with a Jacobs radial.  My buddy hated to prop it.  The plane was destroyed later and the pilot killed.

The first video looks like the rider is on CB1100F?

I'm not sure. I was thinking it was an Interceptor, but never really looked hard. The timing would be about right for either.

only has 110 hp Leno said,  but am guessing the torque is better?

I wonder if that engine is as balanced as our flat 6's going down the road, doubt it...

Jacobs ?  Good ole 'Shaky Jakes'.

Grumman Iron Werx S 2 Ds & Es. R 1820-82-A IF the rekememberer ain't quit!  :2funny: When 10 or 12 of these beasts are fired up on the flight deck and they run thru mag checks fuel selector checks and then goose them to git to the catapult-your insides WILL and DO rattle around in their assigned spaces. OH-and B T W-add about 5 or 6 Sikorsky S H 3 Alphas to the mix each with twin jet turbines. Very rudimentary ear protection and the fact the Marines allowed me the chance to fire some SERIOUS full automatic weaponry MIGHT splain SOME of my hearing problems today. Course when that group launched about a half hour later we went into recovery mode-landing for you non Navy non Aviation types.  RIDE SAFE.
Today is the tommorow you worried about yesterday. If at first you don't succeed screw it-save it for nite check.  1964  1968 U S Navy. Two cruises off Nam.

Huh ? What ? Can't hear ya, speak up my man !

That is cool but I think with the torque it would be a bit of a problem on sudden acceleration.

I've always been amazed when I watch those old carrier movies with a deck full of fighters and all those props spinning. There must have been more than a few incidents. The non-forgiving kind. :(

Me too. Watch the rudder movement/position as they are flying away from the camera. Seems like the foot is all the way to the floorboard.
