Robert's post about the Military now paying for a surgery that I M H O they Should NOT be paying for had a post by me old2soon and my real name-Dennis H. Patterson removed because of certain words I used to describe the more p c version now known as gay. I used two different words in a context I was brought up with. One of he words I used started with a Q and the other one started with an F. This post is in NO way Shape or Form an apology!! If you've met me you KNOW I speak my mind in public here on this board with my friends and fellow riders from P G R and members of my Church and my neighbors here where I live. Have I stepped on toes and pissed off some folks?? cursed right I have. Have my toes been stepped on and have others pissed me off? cursed right they have. Never have figured out HOW to beat around the bush. Mom and Dad taught us to meet life head on. I WILL Continue to meet life head on as long as I'm able. I'll continue to post here til admin revokes me. Startin too understand HOW George Carlin felt. RIDE SAFE.

Back before the ongoing PC movement I used to tell a lot of jokes - always offensive to someone I suppose.  That's the nature of pre-PC jokes.  Several of them were "gay" and no doubt offensive if that was your thing.  I was newly hired as a software engineer at AT&T.  Told a few jokes to the guys to break the ice as it were, proving I was a "good ol boy".

After that gathering - which was off-site over beers - One of the guys came up and said,

"Didja notice two guys weren't laughing much?"

"Not really."

"They are hooked up."

Oops. F.  I just sabotaged my new career.

"Ha ha.  I was F'n withn ya.  You shoulda seen the blood drain outta your face!"

That one stuck with me.  No more "Queer" jokes.

I also grew up in a time and place where many terms were used every day to describe Blacks, Hispanics, Gays, etc. I never knew it was wrong until one time when I was a kid I said something to my Dad in public about a big black guy. I used the word that I had heard my entire life. When my Dad told me not to use that word around "them" I quickly realized something was not right. To use a derogatory term about anybody is probably wrong, no matter how or where we grew up. Dennis, I'm not trying to judge you. But I would imagine those words are offensive to gay people.

If I make the effort to express my views in a way that is respectful and logical, yet still expresses my opposition to the ideas, actions, or attitudes of others, I find that it helps me to clarify my own reasons for believing what I believe.  That includes criticizing the promotion of behaviour that God, in His Word, consistently declares abominable.

Take just a few minutes to read over the "Rules of the Road".  They are not an attempt at all to be politically correct but to simply put down some boundaries that will assist in keeping the atmosphere accepting and respectful.  I can disagree strongly with what someone has to say but I am bound to do so within the Rules of the Road.

When a post or thread is deleted it is no indication of whether I agree or disagree with what is expressed or whether I like or dislike the person expressing.  It is solely responding to a violation of the Rules of the Road.

Take a few minutes to review the Rules.  Near the bottom they invite anyone who finds he cannot post by these rules to simply go elsewhere.  Again, that direction has no concern of whether I like or dislike anyone.

Since three years ago I too am a person who goes through very few detours in expressing my mind but I do try to do so within the rules.

Please don't make my job any more difficult than it has to be.

Read through the rules a couple of times looking for that particular rule.

Didn't find it but, I'll try to keep that one in mind.  Wink

Wow... I knew you geezers were old, but you had quills and ink wells when you were in school?

Did you do your reading by candle light too?

Of course, come to think of it I guess that's better than chiseling your homework into stone tablets like I thought you did.

I may not be old enough to remember ink wells (even though there were still spots for them in some of the desks), but I am old enough to remember refillable fountain pens (the ones with fill levers) and the havoc they could cause. After all, I am still a young whipper-snapper.

We actually had functioning ink wells, but were used to fill the pens mentioned that had the lever on the side. My desk was right behind Anita Steen, a snooty blonde with rather long hair. Hated that girl with a passion, dark blue looked rather nice on the ends of her curly locks.  angel

I recall one time she was being particularly snotty and I told her so. Her answer...."so what, you can't do anything about it." I had some rather large thumbtacks hidden in my desk that fit perfectly on the end of my ruler when taped down. I slipped in through the crack at the back of her seat just as she sat down....never knew she could scream like that. So, the teacher came to me, told me to place my hands on the desk with palms down because she was going to slap them real hard, I assume it was to teach me to keep my hands to myself. I pointed out I didn't use my hands, she didn't buy it. So, I slipped a large tack in between my thumb and forefinger, placed my hands palms down and waited. Mrs. Kenyon brought her hand down with a crashious blow....just as I opened my hands. The teacher screamed louder than Anita. KEWL.  My dad was the school Superintendent, his office was on the third floor. I used to spend a lot of time there.....not socially, I might add.   Evil

Without having seen the other post and therefore not knowing the context of what was said, here are some thoughts on this subject.

I hate "Politically correct" being forced on us.  It is the reverse of free speech. Yet it seems to be demanded everywhere these days.

I understand why the admins of this board censure some things.  It is probably necessary to keep this very large club of people with very diverse thoughts and attitudes from self destructing.  Even so, the more we censure, the more we validate the destruction and demise of free speech.  How sad!

The right to free speech seems to be repeatedly misapplied.  The right to free speech guarantees that citizens will not be restricted or persecuted by the government through its laws controlling what they may say.  That right does not guarantee anyone that he may say anything anywhere.  If you come into my house and say the wrong things I will, according to my own rights, tell you to shut it down or get out.

  O2S
.I prefer someone that speaks their mind. I do and on ocassion it has pissed some people off. If it looks like it and smells like it, I call it crap.

I bite my tongue here a bunch because you don't  change anyone's mind or opinion on much of anything. I also see how some of these guys intentionally go at each other over an opinion. How many times could you call BS and don't?

Don'the change, you won't like yourself if you do.

I am NOT a fan of Political Correctness!

This PC stuff is a bunch of crap and it is part of what is wrong with our nation now.

When people that are an extreme risk to be a terrorist CANNOT be singled out because it wouldn't be politically correct that is a problem.

With that said:

I completely understand why certain terms cannot and should not be used here.

First of all this is a community and we should not intentionally insult or offend other members of OUR community.

If you wouldn't say something directly to someone's face (where you could be punched in your face) then you shouldn't say it here.

There is NO place in a community for  "Keyboard Commando's".

Secondly, this is a "Public" forum.

Anyone can come here and read what we post.

We do NOT need the black eye that these types of comments would cause!

O2S;  I didn't see what you originally posted but I get the ghist of it.

I don't believe that you meant to offend anyone with your words.

I have seen you speak your mind often and have noted that you are usually respectful to other's.

There are plenty here that would do well to follow that example.

Some times how we see things have everything to do with how we were raised.

My father was born in 1925,  He regularly used the "N" word in reference to black people.

Yet, he had many friends that were black.

Some of them were life long friends.

He also showed great respect to his elders, No matter what color their skin was.

As a child I found this confusing because for my generation the "N" word was a deragatory term.

I don't believe that he thought of it as such.

The meaning of words does change over time:

Consider two such words:

The original definition of the word queer:
queer
/kwir/
adjective
1.
strange; odd.
"she had a queer feeling that they were being watched"
synonyms:   odd, strange, unusual, funny, peculiar, curious, bizarre, weird, uncanny, freakish, eerie, unnatural; More
verbinformal
1.
spoil or ruin (an agreement, event, or situation).
"Reg didn't want someone meddling and queering the deal at the last minute"

This word is NOW considered a derogatory term.

The word gay:

gay
ɡā/
adjective
adjective: gay; comparative adjective: gayer; superlative adjective: gayest
1.
(of a person, especially a man) homosexual.
"that friend of yours, is he gay?"
synonyms:   homosexual, lesbian; informalqueer
"gay men and women"
relating to or used by homosexuals.
"feminist, black, and gay perspectives"
2.
lighthearted and carefree.
"Nan had a gay disposition and a very pretty face"
brightly colored; showy; brilliant.
"a gay profusion of purple and pink sweet peas"

The meaning of this word has changed so much that its original meaning has been moved to its secondary definition. In the 1920's referring to someone as gay simply meant that they were happy. Now it defines their sexual preference.
