I feel kind of guilty watching the latest projections. A few days ago it was projected to head for NYC. I'm glad that's no longer in the mix. But I hope all the people down there can get to a safe place. It looks like it's going to be terrible for a lot of people. Be safe my Florida buddies.  cooldude

Well I am in Palm Beach county, wind is starting to pick up but it is not going to get ugly until about 8pm. I am just pissed I didn't make it to the Barber motorcycle event!! I could have made it out in time but might have come back to a trashed and looted house.

My niece lives in Alachua, FL she posted on Facebook this AM that schools and county offices are closed there. Most of the schools are closed so that they can be used as storm shelters.

My local-KY-3 Springfield Mo.-weather guessers are saying it Might go from Cat 4 to Cat 5 cuz of the warm waters the storm proper is passing over. I PRAY all my Brothers and Sisters in the storms path git the F outa the storms way and to a place of safety to ride it out. If possible-keep us posted please! 100-130 M P H+ winds are nuttin to take for granted. RIDE SAFE.

I'm in the Orlando area and my daughters up north are having a fit because we're not leaving. I've been able to bring just about everything inside or in the garage, just a few small heavy items on the pool patio which I've laid on their sides and shoved against the wall of the house. In 2004 when Charley passed right over us as a Cat-2, we had a small table lamp sitting back there and when the storm was over I noticed that lamp never moved an inch. I told my wife with the next big storm I'm getting a chair and sitting next to that lamp. That hurricane did $100k worth of damage to the house, I'm hoping this one is far enough east so we don't get hit so hard this time. I think I'll sleep with my clothes on tonight....if I can sleep at all.

Wow, you KNOW it's serious when even The Marines are retreating!

LOL!  In fairness, you need to know that those young men (and women) are not yet Marines.   Wink

I served on MCLB Albany about thirty-five years ago.  I wonder where they're going to put 6,000 people.   Shocked

John,  please be safe for this sounds like NOT a cat 2 or even 3,  but pretty sure a cat 4 hurricane with wind speeds around 150 mph or so.

Much of anything over 100 mph winds and just asking for unexpected disaster.

take shelter, batten down the hatches,  and be safe please!!! Wink

This is going to be devastating. A Cat 4 and possibly getting to a Cat 5 skirting the east coast of Florida.
The duration will not be typical as if it would simply blow over in a few hours. This is moving slowly and will pound the same area with winds in excess of 100 mph for 24+ hours before it moves on.

Having 3-4 days worth of supplies won't be enough. We'll see time frames for rescue and recovery going into weeks. Power restoration in some places may take months. The damage will be unprecedented.

Then it is suggested that it will do a "u-turn" and may come back and hit the same area again with hurricane force. So extend the rescue and recovery efforts into a few more weeks and power restoration a couple more months.

Would be nice to see this take a hard right turn and just go away.

But it is going to be bad.

Marines, as far as I recall dont really retreat

found the quote

"We're not retreating, Hell! We're just attacking in a different direction!" General Oliver Smith, USMC

Hope all make out ok from this storm

Oss

one more

"So they've got us surrounded. Good. That simplifies the problem! Now we can fire in any direction, those bastards won't  get away this time!" Chesty Puller, USMC.

Look at national radar. See the front moving east from N Texas all the way up to near the Canadian border. If that joins up with Matthew New England is going to get pummeled.

Hope all make it OK with no damage also.  Got off phone with my sister in Jensen Beach ( Port St. Lucie ).  Thankfully it stayed out in the Ocean so winds were not near as bad as could have been.  Authorities said to leave, she said most stayed.  I asked her why did  they not go to Atlanta and stay with her son.  She told me when Hugo came through they did evacuate but when it was over they were not allowed to go back in for days and messed up their life to much.

Folks to the North of her appears to be getting it much worse.  Prayers out to you.

So far, so good for us in Winter Park....at least in our 'hood. All our utilities are underground in this neighborhood so trees and branches blown down don't affect it. I haven't heard any thunder so that means no lightning. A lot of small debris laying around blown out of the trees, might be different elsewhere. We've been getting some pretty strong wind/rain squalls all morning, guess I'll not go out for breakfast.

Not nearly as bad as Charley in '04 which went right over the house, so many huge oaks blown down you couldn't get out of the neighborhood for 24 hours. A guy living up the street has a construction company and called one of his crews to load up one of their big Euclid front loaders and come push the trees out of the way. We had water & phone, no power for over a week. The golf course lost something like 150 trees that time, I told the owner they lost the wrong ones on some fairways.  Wink

Rita got "skeered" during the night so crawled in bed with me. This morning she told me the wind howled pretty good at times, then added...."both from outside and my side."   Grin

All good in Del Ray Beach.

Parents are in a ground floor end unit and they said just a lot of rain and wind.  No damage to the grill in the side yard or the car parked out front.

Very happy to hear this.
