Have filled out online form for Shroder's in Hendersonville, but it's a holiday weekend, and I was wondering if there were any local members in the area with an extra alternator. Returning to Boston from Jacksonville AL, the radio unit started cutting in and out. The display went nuts, a couple of backfires before it quit altogether. Called MOTOW, and got towed to a motel here in town. Any thoughts/suggestions welcomed!

Karen,
The Schroader family is of the Seventh Day Adventist faith... meaning they are closed on Saturdays, but open on Sundays... Try giving them another call this morning. They might be closed anyway for the holiday, as you mentioned, but just because they weren't open yesterday, it doesn't automatically follow they are closed today, too. Wish I could help... Good luck, and please let us know how this works out...

P.S. This could actually be a blessing in disguise! We're all showing up in Robbinsville, NC, (just down the road from where you are right now) Friday for a great weekend of riding and general merriment... SmokinJoe's annual Fall Color Ride... If you aren't in any hurry, why not stick around for that? I guarantee you'd have a blast... Heck, I may even wander that way today, and arrive in the area tomorrow afternoon... Wanna ride some with an old, nearly worn-out biker dude? Can't guarantee you'd enjoy that too much, but we could surely try!

DDT, many thanks for the information! And the correct spelling! I'd be honored to ride with you any time, and this past week have experienced the joy of being totally amazed at the beauty of this country, and overwhelmed by the kindness of people, like the 3 gentlemen in Georgia at a gas station who admired the Valk, but were concerned that I wasn't carrying, and suggested at least a large Bowie knife prominently displayed on the bike. I am also dismayed by the number of abandoned businesses and homes, an indication that things are very wrong with this country. Yes there was poverty in the 60's (the last time I was really able to cruise regularly from Alabama to Detroit, and see how things were every 6 months), but there was growth and stability then. Unfortunately, my cats are being boarded at an exorbitant rate while I'm away, and I have some appointments that need to be kept. Maybe next year. The Tail of the Dragon was great except for the riders and drivers that couldn't manage to stay on their own side of the yellow lines... . Many thanks to Shorty and Brett for the remote diagnosis, I didn't have a clue I'll call when they open, thanks again!

Great News! the trike is in Schroaders, and they have an alternator in stock! I should be mobile tomorrow. Thanks for your good thoughts, I know they helped. Had a great tow truck driver, 27 year old very sharp kid, life gives you blessings to make up for the crap. Been thinking about you since reading your post this morning. Glad it worked out

Awesome - a dealer open on Sunday and with parts in stock! The last time I broke down on the road I was lucky to find a dealer open on a Monday. That would never happen around here unless you're looking for a HD dealer. That's great news Karen!

Is it a "real" Valkyrie or one of those stripped down gold wing thingys? Schroader told me about it seven or eight years ago. I've recently heard other people talking about it, so I think it is still there. And someone said he took them to his warehouse where there's an example of all the GoldWings, all new I think... -Mike

What an experience! They gave me 1/3 off the price of the alternator, and labor was more than reasonable! I left around 3pm yesterday, and got on the Blue Ridge Parkway (what unbelievably beautiful scenery and sunset changes), and ended up in Sparta SC for the night. Left there this morning, and have landed in Hazleton PA. Hoping to make it home today, but better safe than sorry. Tomorrow will have to be good enough. I have met and talked to so many wonderful people on this trip. makes me so grateful for what I have and am able to do. Can't wait to do this again in two years! Thank you all for your support and comments. Mr Schroader said that they have prices on their bikes which they are prohibited from advertising, if you're in the market, it might be a good place to visit...

..., and ended up in Sparta SC for the night. ...
Mama and I spent the night in Sparta once. It's actually in North Carolina. Spartanburg is in SC. It struck me that the high school team in Sparta is called the Trojans. I pass through occasionally Sparta, Missouri. Their high school team is also called the Trojans. Do those folks have no concept of history or are they just trying to practice equal distribution of loyalties? Sparta was a nice quiet place to stay. Sounds like a good ride, Karen.
