Am I the last to hear Bass pro bought out Cabelas ? That is down right unspeakable. Crap crap crap.  Another thing is I've kinda followed Gander Mtn since 1975 an can't believe they have as many stores as the other two combined. I watched Gander rise and fall only to come back up again an did a merger a few years back an I think they are on trouble again.  Back to the buyout is it true it won't be final till 2017 ?

I heard about the Bass Pro/Cabela's the day it hit, but it is an interesting development. I've got a Bass Pro 2 miles from my house, but being a gun guy and not much of a fishing guy, MUCH prefer Cabelas...

Sadly for both, I've gotten in the habit of just going to look at the pretty sights and buy elsewhere because their prices tend to be on the high side.

Gander Mountain I've got a Firearms dedicated one 5 miles from me, but their prices are so comically ridiculous I don't even go in there to look anymore. Only store of any kind I've ever seen that often charges ABOVE MSRP on stuff. Not sure how they're still in business still. I had high hopes for them when I heard they were building a firearms superstore near me but meh... Just too over priced.

The original giant outdoor store, Herters, in MN, was around when I was a kid!  Their catalog was like a Christmas wish book!

I believe it was Cabela's that bought them out decades ago.  There are still a few Herters branded items around.

I agree, it is great to look around their stores, but the prices??????  Ouch!

It is NICE to be able to actually LOOK at, and HANDLE, an item before buying it.  Can't do that mail order.  I wonder what % of their business is lost to people like me, who go in and look and handle, then buy online from a cheaper place?

Probably a decent amount.  I pretty much do the same thing for both Bass Pro and Cabela's.

agree,  Cabelas and Bass Pro are pretty much overpriced except sometimes on sale stuff.

However,  a few Gander Mountain stores nearby have clearance and very good sales on clothing and hunting/fishing items from time to time if you know what the item usually sells for.

I just bought an XXL ATV cover at Gander Mountain on clearance for 30 bucks normal retail 80, very high end quality one as well.  The bargain bins in the aisles has some impulse buys as well marked 1/2 off retail which is normally under any other places sale pricing.  Shoes and clothing (just ask the wife who buys a lot there) tend to be on sale or better yet on clearance a lot of times.  The local Gander store use to have more ATV items on clearance but once they stopped selling Arctic Cat ATV's,  the ATV items stopped being shelfed for the most part.  Tons of fishing stuff on sale usually while hunting stuff not as much though.

When I do go to Cabelas in Prairie du Chien WI,  I am really not impressed with the sale pricing, even the back bargain bin is somewhat higher priced items suppose to be a bargain.  Once in awhile I get lucky and find something reasonably priced.

Another thing you can do is look online at cabelas, etc. and if you find an item on sale you like that the store does not have in stock,  you can ship to store and pick up the item in the store if somewhat nearby you to go pick up.  I do that sometimes as well at walmart.com   since they have a ton more items online vs. what the store carries and sometimes really good deals online and you can ship to store and pick up.

No bass pro shops nearby but the few I have been in are overpriced it seems like just as bad as cabelas.    I like Gander Mountain better, or at least in my area, just seem to have better sale pricing.

When I'm in Springfield Mo AND I have some time to kill I enjoy walkin around bass Pro. Their prices-not so much. My little Mom and Pop gun shop here in Willow beats both those big box stores and guns-ammo-parts and service. I Know I heard the announcement on my local F M station but can't recollect wuz it last week or the week before!  uglystupid2 RIDE SAFE.

Somehow I missed that, and I frequent both stores/web sites regularly.  While shopping for a boarding hand rail for my floating dock several months ago I discovered that Gander Mtn had bought Overton’s last December.  This was done to replace their catalog sales division Gander sold to Cabela’s back in 1995.  There’s more inbreeding going on here than at an Arkansas family reunion.   I was going to say Alabama reunion, but after that spanking they put on the Razorbacks last nite, they deserved a break.
