Last week my cage pass. window wouldn't go up (turned out to be switch), so I had to make a scheduled trip of 100 miles at about 34*F. I had my full cold gear on. Heavy boots, snowmobile suit bottom, shirt, 2 sweaters, winter coat, set of gloves and mitts, and my full face helmet, and scarf.
I still got a chill on the return trip. I just don't generate heat like I used to.
So, what kinda affordable heated vest is there out there? Just need a couple suggestions. I'll go and get it. Nobody local has one.

This may not be responsive to you question but I love my Warm and Safe heated liner. The heated sleeves are awesome and also bring 12 volts to my gloves - which I rarely need. The heated collar along with my Zub does all I need above my shoulders. Cheap? Not so much. http://www.warmnsafe.com/all-heated-jacket-liners/

I got my wife a Sedici vest a while back. She loves it. I think I got it on sale thru Cycle Gear for $119 with the controller.

Choose a vest now and have an unpleasant wire-routing chore later if you decide to get gloves too... a Jacket liner now will be both fabulous and leave you set up for the future, since gloves will plug right into the end of the sleeve...

Gerbings, it will extend your riding season by a month on each side of the calendar. Just buy the jacket without the controller; it will run on high all the time. If you get a little warm riding you just zip down the jacket liner a bit to cool off. I've had mine for a few years now, warmer than you can imagine. I have the gloves too, they are warm too but a don't like wearing them unless absolutely necessary. Best of luck. http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/gyde-by-gerbing-12v-heated-jacket-liner

Absolute best bang for the buck in the heated gear segment is TourMaster Synergy http://www.tourmaster.com/synergy_2_0The manufacturer's website shows retail pricing and that pricing comes with the controller! As a very happy owner let me tell you, these things get HOT! Remember: for heated gear to work properly the fit must be SNUG. Depending upon your body type consider buying one, or even two, sizes down.

That's a smoking deal, if you can get that deal I think that's the way to go.

All that gear at 34 and you got cold? You must have looked like the kid in the movie a CHRISTmas story I can't comment on heated gear as I have never owned any but. Have ridden many days at the temps you are talking.

+1 on Warm N Safe. I have their gloves, controller and 2 jacket liners. BTW Gerbing ripped them off on the controllers. Hired them to make the controllers, then reverse-engineered & outsourced the same from China shutting out WNS. So I buy NOTHING from Gerbing. Now looks like they've folded. Karma.

That's not a good idea!! T.P. I once wired up my controller to reverse polarity, and my jacket stayed on all the time... blegghh... I dropped out of the group to unplug it after a few miles and caught back up. Full blast all the time might be OK if it was real cold, Ida know... -Mike

Another vote for the First Gear JACKET LINER. It does get really warm. We get down into the 17 degree zone a couple times a year and I'm a cold coward any more. I spent plenty of time cold as a brave young lad.

Might also want to read this one. http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,91123.0.htmlMy wife burned herself on the Gerbing micro wire heated jacket. She set the temp to high, and then lowered it. After the ride, I found a few circular blisters on her back, while I was checking her for ticks. Also use a controller, and start low, and turn up as needed, till desired comfort. I bought Gerbing at the time, because it was made locally. Now, I wouldn't touch them. Go for the best price. I would also do what I could to hard wire the controller and plug into my bike, rather than have a wire hanging loose.

Also a USB charge plug for her phone. Works well and keeps everything clear.

been using the tourmaster Synergy heated jacket liner and gloves for years now. The controller has dual settings, the gloves themselves also have integral controller Supposedly you cant get a shock, I only know I havent ever gotten one or got burned, heat is generous
Very happy with it have ridden multiple 11 hr days at or below freezing and never a problem
Just use toe warmers for the feet at less a dollar a day I can deal with that as gas for a day is 10 or more anyhow

Why didn't you just tape some cardboard in place. Probably would insulate better than the glass.

+1. Why I recommended the Tourmaster is that I, also, have been using it for years and have never, ever had a problem with it or been burned by it. Now on high I gets hot, hot enough to make you sweat but still, never ever burned. I have the older collared vest with the modular 3-level controller, I see they now include an inline variable controller instead.
