Any reviews?

Was looking at the 930 10 Shot but in NY, no semi-autos with more than 7 rounds allowed.  Pump mechanical action can hold any amount.

Thanks.

Try this! Hickok45 is always fun to watch during a review. Am thinking he likes the Mossberg line according to this video!

Gary, there should be plenty of reviews of that shotgun on line; just type in the make, model and the word REVIEW.  There will be Utubes too.

The Mossburg 500 and 590 are similar, but the 590/590A1 is the better shotgun made for USMC/LE (not sure if all 590s do, but some have a thicker bbls, and metal safety and trigger guard, not plastic like the 500, and also easier to work on and disassemble, esp the mag tube).  On 500, you have to replace the tube for extended mag, on 590 a mag extension can be added).

If certain shotguns are not allowed in NY (or mags), they will not be for sale in any stores in NY. Adding a longer mag tube than allowed will be illegal (if caught).

I have the 930SPX (18.5"bbl) and it is a great shotgun (the 930 is the only auto shotgun made in America, all other American company autos are imported).  It is listed as an 8 shot; 7 in the tube and one in the chamber.  I highly recommend a pistol grip and not a straight stock (I mean a straight stock with a pistol grip, NOT a pistol grip alone); not only does it take up some of the recoil off your shoulder with the hand, but if you have to hold someone under arms (and maybe dial 911), the pistol grip makes handling the firearm one handed much easier than with just a buttstock.

Note, you can get a Mossy 930 auto in a NY legal five shooter. #85320 (no pistol grip, but one can be added)

I realize a higher capacity mag is desirable, but for home defense you want to be careful of going longer than a 18.5" bbl (riot gun).  Running around your house with a long bbl shotgun (or rifle) is tough in doorways, and maybe trying to clear bad guys from hidden/tight spaces.  The 9-10 round capacity shotguns have 22 and 24 inch bbls, too long for home deffense IMHO.  Most shotguns (pump or auto) can take a 4-6rd sidesaddle easily, so extra rounds are always with you (you do not want a sling with 20 rounds stuck in it... clunky and heavy).

Another thing to keep in mind is that the 930 auto is gas operated and it is widely reported to have nearly 30 percent less recoil than any pump (or recoil operated autos, like Benelli)

I have used stuff from these guys (US company) GGG.  Or Nordic Components.

Here is a Utube of the SPX.  Note, no one can cycle a pump anywhere near as fast as an auto will throw lead.  And if you short-rack the pump, you get .... nothing.

The 590 A1 has the heavy barrel. Not needed in my book but who reads my book anyway!  laugh

Agreed Pappy.  Really for Marine (middle east) or LE work, it may be used for breaching doors or as a club, but not necessary for most of us.

I've got a few Mossberg 500's and they're simple, reliable, inexpensive shotguns that do what they're supposed to do very well in my book... Haven't messed with the up market 590's but I believe they're very similar overall...

The Mossberg pumps that I have owned  were all the 500's and like any production gun had its quirks. While they never jammed except under operator error, there were some loads they didn't care for as much as others. The 500's were all birding guns so had the 26 and 28 inch barrels and no, I would not recommend that length bbl for home defense. I still have a Mossburg O/U 12 gauge that is my sons favorite clays gun that has had several (tens of) thousand rounds through it without a hiccup. A Remington 870 is currently the truck gun (a gun I can carry in the truck box for those occasions that a Pheasant field or duck marsh decides to bump into my travels around the state. Large capacity is not allowed on state or federal lands to hunt so I have never really looked into them.

The Mossberg 500 persuader comes with a pistol grip and an 18 1/2" barrel.

Without a plug it will hold 7 rounds.

Good ol Mossberg 500, got mine in 1976 free when the wife bought a sewing machine for around $100. Killed a lot of pheasants quail and a couple turkeys.

Hmmm...

I've got a "homemade" version like this (18 1/4" barrel and pistol grip) that holds 6 shots but doesn't have the extended tube, but that is with one in the chamber.

I had to dig into the workings of this gun because when I'd put all 5 shells in and chamber the first one, two would pop out of the reserve and jam the gun.  There's a lot of info on the web, including utubes, on these.  Didn't take much to fix mine, a little "Bohemian rigging" took care of it!
Works like a charm now!

This is one of my "home defense" weapons but also a "fungun" when I want to just go shoot something!!

This is my first Mossberg I bought about 25yrs ago and bought another Mossberg 500 at an Estate sale recently, this one has a 28" mod barrel.  I did get a "pistolgrip stock" (regular stock but with a pistol grip) from Popguns which feels really good.

Besides the jamming problem, I've had good luck with both and wouldn't be worried about buying a Mossberg again.

Some of the early ones may not have been built to chamber 3" rounds.

I know that mine was but I do seem to recall some trouble with ejecting them quickly.

Also, using 3" rounds reduced the number of shells that it would hold.

In all my reading, I have never heard anyone recommend 3 or 3.5" shells for home defense.

Those are really hunting loads (for distance).

The 2 3/4 shells do all the damage necessary on defective units.  And with a pump or autoloader, the longer shells marginally increase the chances of a jam or failure.  Now the little shorty loads by Aguilla cause all sorts of trouble in autos and pumps.

Interestingly, I recently read the 20 gauge delivers appx 75% of the power/lead, and with 50-60% of the recoil of a 12 gauge (with the same defensive loads).  A 20 gauge OO buck load delivers appx the same stopping power as 2 .44 mag bullets (at the same time).  If someone wanted a shotgun for home defense and would include his wife and kids in the training, the 20 gauge might be the way to go.

Here is another US made 12 gauge. The KelTec KSG, I have wanted one since they came out with the demo model. At first they were only marketed to police and military, but have lately been available to the public.
Imagine one side loaded with 6-00Buck and the other side loaded with 6-Slugs.
