There have been many, many good rock and blues bands through the years. Deep Purple with Richie Blackmore is tied with a few others for the top in my world. Tied with Zeppelin, Tull, Yes and the Allman Brothers to name a few. Can't have a topic like this without thinking of the "Musical Selection of the Evening" and a certain member who is gone but not forgotten. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvao3r3wseI

Love the stuff you mentioned, and Deep Purple made me think of one of my all-time favorite musicians who had a stint with them as well. Tommy Bolin. I love his solo work. He was one of the best guitarists I have ever heard, and his songwriting complexity and lyrical depth were just amazing. Did himself in way too young, way to soon. I've got all his CDs, and some rare bootleg recordings too. Just one of his many greats, Wild Dogs, performed with Deep Purple https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXyjp-h0OQEAnother fave, Poast Toastee https://youtu.be/A7FOTBdbPN8Flying Fingers https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=A7FOTBdbPN8YouTube also has the complete albums, Teaser and Private Eyes. Yes, Deep Purple has some good music. There are many others in their time. Chicago, Three Dog Night, Frigid Pink, Moody Blues, Doobie Brothers, James Gang, and Uriah Heep being one of my favorites. There are many more. Without the time Hendrix was around where would music be? You kinda tell your age by the music and artist you like.
One thing Deep Purple did do: Gave every beginning guitar player something to play.

Great tune, contrived video.......how can you play a Rick and a Fender at the same time?
Machine Head was a turning point for them. Saw them live in the early seventies.....God what a great show.....Blackmore has his own sound and that is what makes good musicians great.

Every generation has their own tastes of music. Although I like the 70's music, 2nd best to my 80's music, both beat what my 15 year old who is pretty mellow, or so I thought, told me he likes to listen to after watching the CMA awards the other night, him telling me he dislikes country music and would prefer not to listen to it, but can tolerate it. He likes the group Five Finger Death Punch and I will not provide a link since I had to google their songs never heard of them before, most on hear will not like. Reminds me of an extreme Metallica group somewhat and then some. I can tolerate a few of their songs, but most are just too much for my ears to handle. Sort of like when I worked closely with a 26 year old and he said he prefers grunge/mosh pit music, who knew, since on the outside he too seemed really a mellow person much like my kid. I guess cannot judge a book by its cover???

My band still plays 70s classic rock. (Can find my band by looking up Hard Times Band Demo) its on you tube. After the 70s, music changed. I did like some hair band stuff. After that, things really took a dump. That's just my opinion.

My opinion also, 70 and 80s were best, after that sucked more pop. 50s and 60s were cool as well, sure beats the current stuff for the most part. I do enjoy classic and most of the current country music as well, if you want to call some of the current country music real country and not sort of rocknroll, well sort of.. One thing I had to endure my dad born in 1932, he enjoyed polka music and cranked his tunes in our house growing up. Never understood the polka/accordian, but back then, you did not talk back to the parents. Sundays with one TV in the house watching Lawrence Welk was not my cup of tea.

Frigid Pink. I've got some very good memories of sitting in a car under a shade tree at a friends house and listening to Frigid Pink's version of "House of the Rising Sun" on a well used 8 track tape playing though a "superb for the time" car stereo. The guy that owned the car was killed in it shortly afterwards. I drive by the spot where he died nearly every week. The lady (girl then) that lived in the house was a life time friend and is gone now too, taken by cancer when when she was far too young. Interesting thing though, we both grew up, went our own ways, had kids, but stayed close friends. Years after she passed away one of my sons married her daughter. Who would have thought all those years ago when we were sneaking beer and listening to Frigid Pink that we'd eventually both be Grandparents to two of the same children. What a long strange trip indeed!

Recently when sitting at the computer or when I have time between things I've been watching videos of Clapton performing at concerts and other venues as well as just listening to his music.
Really can't say why the sudden re-interest in his music but I'm not going to complain about it, the guy is pretty good on a guitar.

Unknown to MANY, Tommy Bolin was in a band called Zephyr. Their best album IMHO, was "Sunset
Rider". The album cover featured an airplane with the sunset in the background. Their 2 other albums
were simply just too edgy for my tastes.

Oh, I think you are pretty safe here with that. there is a saying long ago 'rap is crap' and that still holds true today. About as far rap as I get is a few songs from the 80s with RUN DMC and two from Tone Loc called Funky Cold Medina and of course Wild Thing... I did have a few from Beastie Boys as well. What is worse than rap is grunge/mosh pit music - do not get that at all. Banging into each other pushing and shoving and then passing bodies around is called dancing?

Zephyr was a great band and a highlight in Bolin's career. He also played with the James Gang. I agree he got a bit "busy" at times with his live guitar work, but when he tightened the riffs for his solo studio releases it was magical. Teaser and Private Eyes are masterpieces IMHO. Lost him at 25, I wish we could have seen how much further his music would have evolved...

Frigid Pink later morphed into a band called Stray Dogg back in the early 80s, I think by then there was 1 original guy left, I played with them for a little bit back then. One of the best shows I went to was Uriah Heep, they played the old St George Theater in Staten Island. They were over 2hrs late getting there and when they came on there was only about 30 people there. They rocked for a couple of hours, you could walk right up to the stage and hang out, wander back to the bar for a beer, then right back to the stage again. Good old days.
