Youuuuu rang?  I've been much less active on this board because I'm so busy with nursing school.

I'm definitely disappointed in the election to say the least.  I'm not Mexican, Muslim, or a woman.  I am not on Obamacare, nor do I rely on any social programs.  I'm too old to get drafted into whatever war Trump is going to get us into.  If I was only concerned about myself, there isn't too much to be worried about.  I don't think like that though.  I have concern for minorities, women, those that are a different religion than I, and the less fortunate.  I worry about what will happen to them.

If you want to talk about a "rigged" system, how about the electoral college?  The 2nd time in 16 years that a candidate wins the popular vote, but doesn't get elected president.  A stark reminder that we do not live in a democracy, but rather a republic.  A republic where billionaires decide which billionaire gets elected to office.  With Trump elected, there is no chance of overturning Citizens United, so the cycle continues.  A republican FBI chief writing a letter less than two weeks before the election, creating uncertainty about Clinton, then retracting two days before the election was awfully shady.

I worry about a religious test to enter the country.  Even though Muslims are no friend to the Jews, I am aware of what happens when a religion gets scapegoated.  I've read of countries (including America) refusing to accept Jews when they were being persecuted.  America was founded on religious freedom, and I am appalled and embarrassed that a man that proffers a religious test to enter our country was elected.

Donald Trump is so thin-skinned and reactionary that I have a genuine fear of nuclear war.  I pray it doesn't happen, but I know he wants it to happen and he will have the power to do so.  He also doesn't believe in science, or climate change, and we have such a small window to turn that around that I fear for the world, especially the less privileged.  I have disagreed with Republican policy for a long time, but this is the first time that I feel a real, existential threat to the existence of mankind (at least since the cold war).

I am embarrassed for America.  A man that has cheated on at least two of his three wives, is divorced twice, and has bragged about trying to sleep with married women is going to be our president.  A man accused by a dozen women of sexual assault.  A man that is currently being sued for fraud.  Don't get me wrong, I understand why people didn't vote for Hillary, but electing a brash, egotistical reality tv show host with no political experience President?  Im aghast.

Now Russia will claim whatever countries it wants.  Estonia?  Lithuania?  The rest of Ukraine? How about Poland while they are at it?  China, go ahead and help yourself to whatever you like in the East China Sea.  Trump will be cool with it all.  How about we let Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and Japan get nukes.  What could possible go wrong with that?  We are royally screwed folks.

I don't know if you noticed earlier in my diatribe, I referred to Trump as "our president".  Unlike many Republicans, I respect the process even if I dislike the outcome.  How many of you said Obama was "not your president"?  Now that the tables are turned, and the Republicans will control every aspect of government, do you still think the strategies Republicans have used the past 8 years are a good blueprint for what the Democrats should do?  Should the Democrats filibuster every single thing proposed?  Refuse to vote on presidential appointments?  Is what's good for the goose good for the gander?

Most of the speculations are so wild they don't deserve any discussion.  Wow.  Just wow.

For those of you that have previously complained of the electoral college you must have forgotten what the purpose of the college has been since the beginning.  The point of the electoral college was to offset slightly the advantage of more populated states to give the less populated states some power.  Each state gets a number of votes corresponding its number of Representatives (population) and the number of its Senators ( equal power for each state).  That someone can be elected while his opponent captures the popular vote demonstartes that the college is doing what it was intended to do.

It does make sense that someone from a very large state would complain of the electoral college while people from the Dakotas or Montana would not.

I have been against it in the past, but I changed my mind.

It is only slightly less democratic than popular vote (in a vacuum), but perhaps more democratic overall when looking at all 50 states (with an attempt at fairness for the small population ones, whose votes might otherwise be entirely meaningless).  We are after all called the United States, so each state ought to have at least some say in national elections (and 3 or 4 electoral votes is not much say).

The fact that CA, NY, and FL have some of the biggest populations (of nitwits) also has something to do with it.  (No offense intended to the vast majority of you, just a couple of you)

My VA only has 13 electoral votes, and we are clearly full of nitwits too.

I see a glass ceiling at work here and not the one Hillary was trying to go through but the one that money insulates people from so they have no idea the consequences of the rules and laws enacted that people have to suffer with. It gives god like thought to those who forget that everyone in the middle is not ok but struggling. It make them see things of the poor but forget those who are the working middle class that struggle each day to make it.

Well for sure the vast majority of D votes came from the self interested NoVA voters in the northern counties.  But 75K Ds in Richmond, and 41K in Norfolk was enough to lose us the state 49.9% D and 45% R (ie 5% of the vote carried it for the Ds)

I find this interesting.   Now you have concerns about the Electoral College but, before the election, not  a word was spoken of your concern when you thought all those swing states would go your way.

Do you really need a lesson in the obvious, I doubt it, but are just being obtuse.  Trump won the red and Hillary the blue and the electoral votes that went along with them. The popular vote was not that much different and confined to small dense cities but Trump won more of the country, thank God.

  Do you really need a lesson that total land mass doesn't mean crap. It's the total amount of votes that wins each states electoral votes. Obama didn't have the country's land colored blue either, but he won twice. Winning a county that covers a third of the state doesn't mean you get a third of the votes.

However, when you look at all of the red on that map it is obvious that the majority of the country did vote for trump.

She won in the big cities but she didn't win the country.

Maybe the electoral college does have a purpose.

So that translated into Trump winning more people and territory in areas less densely populated and less votes and losing the state. It does not mean that people in the blue or red did not vote for the opposite candidate only that was the majority vote in that area. This map shows more people voted for Trump across the country in big and small cities and they occupy a greater land mass not like tightly packed NY. This represented counties and cities also so we are really talking about population density as compares to land mass and electoral votes. But it comes down to more red more wins since the cities big cities only have so many electoral votes, once gone they are done and we look to other states, cities, towns to pick up votes regardless of population density of that one city.
