President Barack Obama to Award Medal of Freedom to Tom Hanks, Ellen DeGeneres, Robert DeNiro and More!
http://www.etonline.com/new...ert_deniro_and_more/

Saw this on the nightly news, kind of confused me so I asked my (Very Liberal) spouse what these folks did to be so honored. We looked at the list, have no idea then, it hit me. Those are the folks that came out for Obama and for Clinton. Sorry but, I have to be honest, if I'm right, that surely cheapens the "honor". Some one please tell me what these folks did to be so honored?

"The Presidential Medal of Freedom is not just our nation's highest civilian honor - it's a tribute to the idea that all of us, no matter where we come from, have the opportunity to change this country for the better," President Obama said in a statement released by the White House on Wednesday. "From scientists, philanthropists, and public servants to activists, athletes, and artists, these 21 individuals have helped push America forward, inspiring millions of people around the world along the way."
Following the announcement, celeb honorees began thanking the president on social media.

"I am so honored. Thank you, President Obama," DeGeneres tweeted to the @POTUS twitter handle.

"Receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom would be an honor under any circumstances, but receiving it from President Obama, who has fought so tirelessly to bring about social justice for everyone, makes it that much sweeter," Abdul-Jabbar wrote on Facebook. "I'm especially proud to be sharing this award with some of the people who have influenced my life."

The Presidential Medal of Freedom honors "individuals who have made contributions to the security of national interests of the United States," as well as those promoting world peace, and other "significant public or private endeavors."
The award ceremony will stream live via the White House website on Nov. 22

With less than two months before he officially turns over the White House keys to President-elect Donald Trump, President Obama has a packed schedule that includes international state tours, and hosting guests at the White House.
Watch the commander-in-chief and his wife, Michelle, get down to Usher's "Yeah!" during BET's Love & Happiness: An Obama Celebration concert special in the video below.

President Barack Obama has named the nearly two dozen recipients set to receive the country's "highest civilian honor."
Tom Hanks, Ellen DeGeneres, Robert DeNiro, Diana Ross, Lorne Michaels, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Michael Jordan are among the star-studded list of honorees earning the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

While not officially the definition of the award, the White House page on this doesn't provide any details on what qualifies one for such an award so I got this from Wikipedia. Based on the history of the award, it appears to be a political pay off in recent years. Please correct me if, I'm wrong.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is an award bestowed by the President of the United States and is—along with the comparable Congressional Gold Medal—the highest civilian award of the United States. It recognizes those individuals who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".[3] The award is not limited to U.S. citizens and, while it is a civilian award, it can also be awarded to military personnel and worn on the uniform.
It was established in 1963 and replaced the earlier Medal of Freedom that was established by President Harry S. Truman in 1945 to honor civilian service during World War II.

Apparently, this award has lost it's significance.    Embarrassed

I am still trying to figure out what it takes to win.  I was on the short list this past August and had high hopes.  However when I showed up with my red  Make America Great Again cap, I did not even make it to the interview process.  Some lady told me to try again next year with Hillary.  While exiting through the glass doors I noticed  through a reflection in the glass a fake gesture by the lady as if an attempt to kick me right in the ass.  Needless to say I was most bummed.

I thought she made a gesture, letting you know you would be number one next time!

Is there anything, anything at all that you guys won't bitch, piss and moan about? It's like a broken record.

It's been a week now, hell over a week since the election. An election that gave you just about everything you wanted. And all you've done is bitch about this, piss about that. What in the hell makes you guys happy, besides trashing Obama and whining about liberals? Hell, one of the members here even had the ignorance to call the current First Lady an ape. WTF is up with that?

I think it's been worse on this board since last Tuesday than it was before the election. I started a thread called poor winners, and it got locked because of personal attacks.

Your side has the White House and both Houses of Congress! Trump may get the chance to fill a seat or two in the Supreme Court! And still you're not happy.

It's gotten bad enough where two members in good standing, who have a different political stance that the other 99% + that frequent this board, who have contributed to this forum a lot longer than I've been around, are talking about leaving. Does that make you happy? Maybe that's it. Well boys, I hope they don't leave, because that would be wrong. And don't worry, I'll stick around...This board is supposed to be about the Valkyrie and all the great times it brings us. But this board is hands down, the most antagonistic forum I've ever seen.

This board quit being about motorcycles years ago its nothing more than a hate website. I've seen so many members badgered about politics that it's easier just to leave and let them have this site. The administrators lost control of this board and are powerless to stop it.

Why is it so difficult to ignore the postings you are not interested or do not wish to participate in?

Seems to me to be a simple thing to do to have it the way you wish.

But somehow the answer is always that we should deny others they say or require them to view things as you do.

If you want more motorcycle postings on the general board, post them!
There are a lot of motorcycle postings on the Tech thread. Enjoy them!

Choice is yours. Engage or don't engage. It is an internet board.

As to this topic, the Presidential Medal of Freedom the point is that the value of the recognition this award bestows has be diluted because of the frequency and reason it is now given.

This once went to the likes of the Astronauts of Apollo 13 who risked their lives exploring space for human kind and now go to the likes of Lorne Michaels a TV producer.

This isn't a direct critique of Obama either. This has been an issue going back to Reagan but as things have progressed the value of the award has diminished.

Just wish the standard would be maintained at the highest level.

I did not set the rules, but one might think that for an award this high, the bar would be extraordinary  high.  Sort of like a civilian Congressional Medal of Honor Award.

I don't think this topic was about bitching about the POTUS as much as it was bitching about the winners of this award, no matter who awarded it, and I agree. It's reduced to a level that means nothing anymore.
Baldo,, back off a bit,, this was not driven at the POTUS,, least not to me it wasn't.

If you go back to review his posts most all are political in nature, a self proclaimed liberal and a frequent political poster but didn't see much else.  So I would think its sour grapes.

There is no Congressional Medal of Honor but recipients of the Medal of Honor are almost always if not always members of the military who have either lost there lives or greatly risked their lives in an extraordinary act of bravery ans sacrifice.

I agree with you that this award at the President's option has certainly fallen low enough that it should in no way be compared to the Medal of Honor.

Baldo, with slight rewording your post could equally apply to yourself and the other very active political posters from your side.  If the few people who regularly start such threads (from both sides), yourself included, would simply stop this crap would go away.
