I thought I'd crowdsource an explanation.  For the last couple of years my TV has been growing tiny granules of something on the back.  They're light tan in colour, and tastes a little salty (yeah, I tasted one tiny grain).  It only grows on the textured plastic, not the shiny plastic of the bezel, and not on metal parts or decals.  It's not mould, as here in Calgary the air is quite dry, and we don't run a humidifier.  Any ideas?

This is going to sound like a dumb question, but is it an RCA tv?

I know you said it was not mold but it sure looks like it. Why dont you take some Clorox on a rag and wipe the back clean and see if it comes back.

yeah, durr on my part, didn't see that.
Anyway, I found some answers on Google that said it's the fire retardant chemical in the plastic.  It comes out and makes small crystal-like white spots.

Sure looked like mold to me but the fire retardant chemical sounds like a good possibility.

Well, all flat screen TVs - computer monitors pick up dust (or whatever's floating around in the house) from the electronics/magnetism and the heat can make it sticky.

Porn!

I finally get porn on my TV!  Uh... it seems porn isn't quite as exciting as advertised.

It must be as suggested, with the plastic leaching some kind of chemical.  After doing a little googling myself, it seems a solution is to clean it, then wipe WD40 or ArmorAll on it.

Since you said it's salty, I would think it is body perspiration that has dried on the surface of the TV.

Maybe due to that porn that was on the TV?  Undecided

When I was a young boy I came home to find my Dad had opened the back of our TV
and was messing with something. Of course I had to ask what are you doing Dad?
His reply was emptying all the dead Cowboys out here because itshe full.
Well it seemed to make sense to me at the time.

How far are you from a source of salt water. I know you're east of the Pacific but are you far enough to not get salt air?

I've seen similar deposits on TV's and other electronics around  (New Jersey & Florida) where there can be a salt content in the air and it set on objects. When the water vapor evaporates the salt deposits are left behind. I've seen it on cars, glass, homes, basically anywhere salt air can leave a dew or film.

Real far.

If this was something condensing from the air, I would think I would find it on other surfaces as well, and that's simply not the case.  I'm pretty convinced that this is something leaching out of the plastic.
