where are the left wing democrats and why are they not up in arms to protect the children??

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/6-children-killed-in-chattanooga-school-bus-crash-2016-11-21

http://www.schoolbusfleet.com/news/713437/nhtsa-updates-school-transportation-fatality-data

The new report shows that from 2005 to 2014, 304 school-age children were killed in school transportation-related crashes. Of those, 53 were occupants of school transportation vehicles, 130 were occupants of other vehicles, 111 were pedestrians, nine were pedal-cyclists, and one was classified as an “other nonoccupant.”

AND PEOPLE IN GENERAL??

The report also puts the school transportation-related crash data in the context of overall vehicle crashes: From 2005 to 2014, there were 331,730 fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes. Of those, 1,191 (0.36%) were classified as school transportation-related.

There has been one school bus driver in this area for quite some time that reads as she drives and has a bracket/holder for her books. You usually see her reading while going quite a bit over the speed limit. We don't have many accidents here though.

Why doesn't some parent have their child record video of this, then send copies to the police, the bus company, and the local news stations?  At least half of kids carry devices capable of this.

As a CDL holder and school bus driver, she is not allowed to be distracted while driving. No cell phones, ear buds, books, drinking/eating. These are instant firing offenses. PLEASE: call her district and report her NOW!!!

I've driven Scottsdale, AZ kids to school for 12 years now.

+1 I sure wouldn't want it on my conscience that I knew it was going on and did nothing if she wrecks and hurts some kids. I think GR's idea of filming her would be the most effective.

When I was 10 yrs old and living in rural Iowa our bus had to cross a small bridge that was on a corner. Our bus driver liked to "hot rod" the bus. I told my Dad at dinner one night that the way he goes around that corner , when the road gets slick we will take out that bridge. Sure enough 3  months later, we did just that and luckily ,, actually amazingly, no one got hurt. He got fired.

I agree. She needs to go.

Report to the bus yard and the Superintendent of Schools.

Some of the safety videos I watched during my time as a bus driver showed that not all buses are made equal.

Some have the foot pedals slightly offset compared to another bus.

It can be all too easy to push what you think is the brake for the bus to speed up causing the driver to push even harder on the brake making the bus go even faster.

The private schools I drive for have different makes/years of buses and I have to reorient myself each time I get in a bus because the pedals on one are offset compared to the other.

I have not been involved, but, have watched it. It has been said for many years that she has been turned in and nothing apparently has been done. At least nothing that changed the problem. The driver does have 'connections'.

Send an email of the video to the paper and the local tv news (the cable co news is best) and DEMAND the story be published or you will send it viral on facebook to all your million friends with a caption

luckily our old lady bus driver retired thank god from my kids school.  she pops curb all the time in town very badly all the time and even got caught once in the bigger town of madison wi on a field trip going the wrong way down a one way street.  NOT good, very dangerous bus driver for sure no idea how she got a license to begin with.

Our bus driver when I was growing up was an old woman that couldn't even driver her car. The house right after mine she had to turn around in their barn lot so she would back in then pull out onto the road. I kid you not, she would back right into a light pole almost every time. Several times she busted out the rear window. One time the road was covered in snow and she got stuck going up a hill, was too afraid to back it down the hill so I offered to do it for her. She knew most of us grew up on farms and knew our way around tractors and semis. I backed it all the way down the hill backed into a driveway and she took back over.  She was lucky she never killed anyone.

In British Columbia it's illegal to be in a moving vehicle without your seat belt on and fastened and yet none of our school busses have a single seat belt in them. The little ones in our busses are sitting ducks for any accident......when something goes wrong they are tossed around like marbles. Absolutely makes no sense!!  Angry   Sad

If we want to protect our kids,.....why aren't we requiring school buses to have side curtain and seat cushion airbags?

Why? Because it costs money? We don't care to spend more than the minimum on school kids.

OK......JMHO

I am surprised though that seat belts are not standard eqmt. for all and must be wearing them at all times.  sort of makes sense doesn't it to have them??

seat belts 2 to a seat cannot be that costly to install.

Heck, our bus driver on the oldest bus we had never used the clutch to shift gears and it lived, the bus that is.

When I bought the 57 my dad took me to sears and we bought 2 sets of seat belts for the front seat

It was like 35 bucks a set

Expensive?

How about we just say we will take the money from the superintendents salary of every school district?  wanna bet how fast they would find money in the budget?

The real big thing that gets me is RR crossings without gates  When I was in HS a bus was hit by a train at such a crossing   Lots of dead kids that day in Valley Cottage NY

Seat belts are on all NYS busses but how to make sure kids use them?

I'd like to add as an ex public school bus driver that having seat belts would add to the trip time because the driver would then become responsible for making sure every child used the seat belt.

So 62 elementary school kids get on the bus.

How long do you think it would take for the driver, once the kids are seated, to then walk the bus and make sure each seat belt is fixed securely and correctly.

Also some trip there are 2 kids to a seat. Others there are 3. So now the driver has to make sure that each child is using the right pieces of the seat belt.

All this time you the car driver are sitting "patiently" waiting for the red warning lights to be turned off and the bus to start moving again.

How many bus drivers would want the responsibility of seat belts? That with the ever present threat of massive law suits against a driver who drove a bus when a child got injured having removed the seat belt.

Makes my head hurt thinking about it.

15 years here driving school bus.
1. Very safe as is.
2. Cost
3. Seats are not like greyhound. Benches. So, belts would need to fasten to floor BEHIND seat. Will trip kids in seat behind.
4. The belts have steel ends on them. Make great weapon, swinging them around.  Driver cannot stop all this.
5. Seats are designed to catch the kids, keep them between seats, padded front and rear. Accidents are rare where this does not work.

In ND, first fatality inside bus not until 1980s! Think how many millions of miles driven by then!
