I had an incident yesterday that I hope won't go down as thanksgiving lore in our family. Unfortunately my wife and I are both required to work all holidays except Christmas. So the tradition for the last few years has been at my In-Laws. Usually it's just my son in law and myself watching football. Everybody else is socializing. So I'm in the living room really getting into the Cowboy game after stuffing myself. I got up during a commercial to get some water and a pee break. Being in a hurry, I didn't fold down the recliner on my Mother in laws chair. I come back and plop my fat ass in it and.... SNAP !!! I broke the friggin chair.  Embarrassed Everybody stops and starts busting up and making fat jokes at me.  2funny So on my one day off I'm off to Ace Hardware to redeem SOME of my dignity.
I sure hope they forget about this by next year.  Smiley

I think how fast and completely they forget about it depends on how good you repair the chair.....lol great story.  BTW if its un-fixable replace it with a LazyBoy. They are made really well and the workings have a lifetime warranty, I even asked if it broke because a really fat person used it, and yes that is covered.  Cheesy

Every single Lazy Boy brand chair, recliner, sofa recliner I have owned has broken, in the reclining mechanism pivot, which is cheaply and weakly made.  Warranty is little help when I have no truck to haul it long distance to a warranty center.  I cobbled them together with bolts and wire, for awhile.  The only one that didn't break was the sofa bed (nonrecliner).  Two chairs got drug out to the deck and beat to death with a sledge (the parts fit in the garbage dumper that way) (and I needed the exercise).

I am done with Lazy Boy.

Next up, heavy-ass Flex Steel.

I've had to repair almost all the recliners that I've reupholstered. All different makes, the best ones were old Lazyboys, built solid as a rock. The new ones are no better than the rest.

LOL!  I predict that no matter what you do to repair or replace the retelling of that story along with its increasing exaggerations will live on in the family's Thanksgiving traditions.

I have a sinking feeling you are right.  Angry There is not much that they get to laugh at the old man about. But when they do it seems to live forever.  Smiley

I've had to repair almost all the recliners that I've reupholstered. All different makes, the best ones were old Lazyboys, built solid as a rock. The new ones are no better than the rest.

Agree,  went furniture shopping 3-4 years ago after near 25 years owning a flexsteel sofa and loveseat and lazyboy recliner, both well used in those 20+ years.  Still had some life left in both so sold them online for a few hundred bucks still.

The new lazyboy recliner I bought the arm lift mechanism underneath has plastic clips that will break, just a matter of time.  First few months one broke on me but easy to replace and the store where I bought it from knew exactly what was the issue have replaced 100s of them snap on clips.

Flextsteel sofa/loveseat is same way they used to be made in dubuque IA years ago but NO longer carry a lifetime warranty on springs and internals since although not excellent quality like they used to be, still decent mid to upper level quality, just not great and indestructible anymore.  We bought the BEST with lifetime warranty MADE IN AMERICA Smith Brothers sectional.  You get what you pay for nowadays.

Both will last another 25+  years am sure of it with the lazyboy recliner giving out first am sure since not on par as what it use to be made of.   Spent 5-6 weekends shopping for furniture all over until we found something that was comfy and well made.  I do  not believe in spending say 800 on a piece of furniture that will only last 5-10 years would rather spend 1500 and last 25+ years.

Next time you will learn to put down the reclining mechanism as you really should is NOT that hard to do - live and learn on this one!    Am sure you will be the laughter of several turkey days yet to come.

We have had good service (15 years +) from a couple of BarcaLoungers. One, mine, has been reupholstered twice.
