As most are aware, I hit the gym 2-3 times a week. It's good for the body and also is a social event from time to time. There's a number of young gals in there and they have often struck up conversations with me, nothing serious, just chit chat about whatever. A couple are nurses that I recalled from my hospital stay in 2012 and we hit if off right away, they were impressed since they both knew my condition at the time. Well, this past Wednesday I was going through the checkout line at our local Publix supermarket, having picked up a couple last minute items for Thursday. Just as I reached the checkout gal, an older woman I judged to be in her 60's at least, I suddenly got a little poke in the ribs along with a giggle. I turned around and there stands one of the nurses in civies, she's a bit of a prankster so her fisrt comment was "John, I didn't recognize you with all your clothes on." I looked at her sort dead-pan and replied "so, did my check clear?" I thought the woman behind the counter was going to swallow her tongue, the gal behind my nurse friend about died laughing, they were together but I had never met her. As I walked away the prankster told the checkout lady about us going to the same gym, judging by her face she wasn't buying it. The two gals caught up with me outside and we chatted for a time, then went our separate ways. I could see the woman inside looking out at us while talking to the people in line, pointing in our direction, etc.  We all had a good chuckle over it, will probably be good for a laugh at the gym as well. She's short, about 5'1" as I recall, I call her "Little Bit" when I see her, makes the workout more enjoyable....especially for an old fart.   ;D

What I find interesting, sadly I must add, is when I see what many of the younger members are lifting compared to myself, guys in their 20's and 30's. In many cases I either match or exceed them. When they find out the age, they often ask how I do it. I simply tell them that the quality of life they lead when young has a huge impact on the quality of life they lead when older. If asked, I tell them it includes no smoking, drugs of any kind, drinking, meaningless night life which I say includes physical relationships....be they long term or one night stands. They often joke about the "one night stand" thing, so I tell them whenever you're with a woman, keep in mind that you're in bed with every other person that has been there before you. If she's that easy, the bedroom will be rather full with the ghosts of her past. I usually get a blank stare about then, gives them something to think about....I hope.  ;)

Thanks for reminding me John, I've been lax in going to the Fitness Center, gotta get going before my going goes.
When I walk around the track, everyone passes me.  It doesn't bother me as I never was very fast in sports ,even in high school.  I give the Nautilus machines a fair workout but not like some.

I really don't care to walk in the fitness center, it takes 24 laps to do one mile. I rather walk outside. On Thanksgiving day, I walked in the park, got some time in but wasn't too enjoyable at 36 degrees, overcast, and 10 mph wind.  Obviously, i don't live in Florida  :)

Good story!  Fast thinking.

I too hit the gym 3/4 times a week.  I have issues with shoulders brought on by abusing them for too many years (Doc said total rebuild is coming).   So, I don't go heavy any more when working upper body.  There are quite a few young folks (20's-40's) that lift  pretty heavy weights and do so with good form.  I enjoy watching them as I lift and walk.  Especially the females.   I know "SSC".

Since you've been working out, Oleman, I'd prefer "Solid Senior Citizen"... John, good story, and your assessment of potential partners is spot on!

I have been working out with free weights most of life, hard to change.  They do work the small stabilizing muscles of joints as well as the major muscle groups.  I have tried using straps, stack machines, and a few other exercise equipment over the years, but go back to the free weights.  Maybe just mine set.

I know it is hard to change I still use free weights and some machines for legs, back can not take the wt. any more and hearing loss and balance go hand in hand. Straps are different seems you do not make any progress but you do. I work in all types of stuff just to keep the body guessing and getting bored with the same routine. Its just keeping quality of life as long as I can, almost 66 and no meds yet. Being a manual labor all your life helps. I know I will fall a part one of these days and hope it is a long way off. Keep on doing what your doing, it pays off, makes life great.
