I'm trying to plan ahead for my 88th winter in Indiana. I already have four steel wheels and Blizzak tires for the Mazda Six.
This year, I took another step ahead, pardon the pun. I've ordered a pair of boots with the new Vibram "Arctic Grip 'soles, supposed to not slip much on wet ice. I've also went state of the art and ordered a multiple layered carbon fiber cane to help in walking on snow, ice etc, when the cold turns my legs into a shadow of their former selves.
I do have shoe chains for my shoes but taking them off requires sitting in a chair. Hard to do in some circumstances. As we age, we find that the laws of gravity not only work very well on motorcycles when we forget the kickstand but they also work very well in conjunction with a loss of balance and stiff knees.
I do ok but extra insurance is always good. The fancy carbon fiber cane is a far cry from the 'medical' four legged canes and it will give me sort of a attitude close to Fred Astaire but without the top hat, tails, and dancing shoes. I could've opted for flames on the cane (rhymes) but a more conservative approach was warranted.
