I am a head technician at a high tech company, I work with millions of dollars of the most leading edge equipment available, so I think I can help you out here....

Try turning it off and on.

Are there external speakers or any sort of headphone plugged in or has there been?
What make model is the notebook?
Look or a function key - mute combination... The Function key will be usually in the lower left part of the keyboard and say function or "fn" or something like that.
Once you find it, look on the F keys at the top for a mute icon, and try pressing the fn key and that key. (On the laptops in front of me right now that'd be FN + F11 on one, FN + F4 on another and the 3rd laptop has a dedicated "mute sound" button above the keyboard.)

There's a physical volume knob, and almost certainly
a software volume knob. I just googled "windows volume control"
and there's probably something there that will help
you find the software volume knob.

If I type "sound" into my Linux search box, my software volume
control comes out... you can probably type "sound" in that
little box down at the bottom left near your windows start
button and find yours...

Ta -Da!

I just "fixed" it moments  before reading this.

It was connected to a TV with HDMI so I could watch Netflix whilst I'm away from home.

For future reference - Often problems with devices can be fixed by reinstalling the device driver.  Go to START/Control Panel/Device Manager/Sound, video and game contollers, right click on the device - on my Win7 it's "High Definition Audio Device", and select "uninstall".  My laptop has 2 of them.  Then pull down "action" and click on " scan for hardware changes".  It will reinstall the driver.  More often than not this will fix it.  Periodically the drivers get corrupted, this reloads a fresh copy from the stored library. Usually requires a restart.
