http://www.breitbart.com/2nd-amendment/2016/12/23/obama-administration-finalizes-social-security-gun-ban/

Barack Obama’s Social Security Administration (SSA) issued the final version of a rule that will doom tens of thousands of law-abiding (and vulnerable) disability insurance and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients to a loss of Second Amendment rights under the guise of re-characterizing them as “mental defectives.” The SSA, for the first time in its history, will be coopted into the federal government’s gun control apparatus, effectively requiring Social Security applicants to weigh their need for benefits against their fundamental rights when applying for assistance based on mental health problems.

And what percentage of these people have committed a crime or any sort of violence with a gun? I'm  willing to bet less than the 1%.

The problem I have with what I read is that the definition of mentally impaired or mentally ill may be a bit broad.  This would leave a bunch of room for over-reaching interpretation.  I really don't have a problem with limiting gun access to people that are truly I'll, hey...If they can't be trusted to care for their own affairs, then they really shouldn't be left to defend themselves either.

Taken with a grain of sale - recently it was reported (can't attribute other than some media - I get news from many sources) that the Trump plan is to roll back ALL Obama EO's and then reinstate selected ones.  I think something along those lines would be a good plan as the view from here is most of them were liberal edicts that SHOULD be shut down.  But I believe pretty much nothing from the media, even less of political promises, and my trust for those in power is below zero.

I am just now signing up for VA health care.  Have not filled in a questionaire yet.  If I have guns is none of their damn business.  Yet don't want to set flags at bureaucrat's whims.  (Like the Nazi lines, to the right is the showers...) Probably just lie if I get asked.  It's none of their business - ask me unreasonable questions especially re: my unalienable rights and I'm OK with lies.  Especially if they threaten me with penalties for lying - probably add a few whoppers for good measure.

This is way broader than mental problems. As in, if you don't drive or just don't want to bother with going to the bank and shopping so your kids do it for you, you are now banned from firearms ownership.

I think the idea behind it is both brilliant and diabolical. It makes use of the science of human manipulation. As in, slowly remove more and more people for the list of those who are allowed to exercise their 2nd Amendment rights.

When legal gun owners are reduced to a small enough percentage, then advance the "why are they allowed to own firearms when I am not" form of manipulation just as Indiana did a few years ago when pickup trucks were still exempted from our seat-belt law. Human jealousy and pettiness is a powerful tool when used this way.

Thankfully, the election short-circuited this approach I think, at least for now. However, both the supporters of freedom and those who wish to destroy it are playing a long game. Because of this, we need to reverse this creeping loss of freedom while we have the upper hand.

One should also realize that this change coupled with the holy grail of gun-control, "federal gun registration" would send collectors to the homes of these people to confiscate firearms already owned preventing these firearms from being passed to younger generations. Halting the tradition of gun ownership is a necessary step in disarming the American people of course. If Hillary had won, this is just one of the many terrible scenarios America would have faced.

We dodged a big bullet in November. During the next four years we need to build 2nd Amendment defenses future attackers won't be able to tear down easily.

you guys are on the right track!
The definition of mentally defective, once implemented, can be broadened by the government very easily. Or, where there is a conflict or a grey area you would have to fight the government and we all know how easy and how fast the government works.
