We took my daughter and her family to Vegas to fly out to Alaska for a week. She is a big fan of Rhonda Rousey. Me not so much, but I'm a big fan of MMA. So she bought tickets for my Son in law, her, and me to UFC 207. My wife can't stand to watch it, she thinks it's too brutal and doesn't understand why anybody would want to watch it. So my grandson being the great kid he is decided he wouldn't go to the fights, as much as he wanted to and would hang out with his grandma. They ended up having a good time at the arcades and going to see Chris Angel. Anyway, I don't really get out in our pop culture much anymore. I had a great time but I couldn't help but notice many things have changed.
To begin with, you don't get tickets anymore. You get some barcode thingy on your phone to get in. Arenas have come a long way since my day of the Cow Palace, Oakland Coliseum, Kingdome, etc. The T-Mobile Arena is pretty nice. Lots of good seating, fancy Suites, and bars.
I didn't I would ever pay $14 for a beer in my life. But I did. More than a few.  Undecided
Young women still like to dress up and strut there stuff. But nowadays there is not much left to the imagination.  Shocked
Everybody is more interested in taking selfies than watching the event. Young girls are taking them. Old women are taking them. Young men are taking them. Old men are taking them. They even put all these selfies that are posted on Facebook up on the big screen for everybody to see them and take more selfies.  Shocked
It's kind of strange being in an arena with 30,000 people and noticing you are in the top percentile of old people.  coolsmiley
I thoroughly enjoyed myself. But next time I might just stay in the hotel with my wife, a six pack, a good dinner and watch it on TV. After all my psyche can only be reminded so much of my ilrelevance in our society.  Smiley

Wow!  I thought the folks that went to those "events" were paid to be there..............

Shows you how out of touch with reality I am.  Wink

I hear you meathead.  I'm an avid MMA, hockey and football fan. I've been to live events in all of them, and while I had a blast and enjoy them all, I do also like watching at home. So many people just go to get drunk, are constantly walking by you to get more beer, take a leak, etc.

And the selfie thing...yeah, most people appear to be there only to show all their Facebook and InstaTwatter friends that they were there, and not to actually watch the event.

...yeah...we sound old.  2funny

I think we have much in common. Though I would rate them in the order of Football, Hockey, MMA. The selfie thing escapes me. I saw people sit there and take 6 in a row, then 30 minutes later take 6 more. I quit paying attention after that.

I think almost all of us 40 and over do not get all that selfie B.S.

My kids are HORRIBLE, especially daughter always snapping pics of herself with her darn glued to her hip camera smartphone.  Although she has slowed down a TON since age 16 two years ago with over 9000 texts per month,  she does more snapchat crap more than anything else.

I have never done a selfie for fear of breaking my camera.... 2funny

back on topic,  younger generation thinks nothing of blowing dough out the window thinks money grows on trees.  I have much more important things to spend what little income we make on vs. going out to eat and drinking and concerts.  Have not seen a paid concert since I think 1998 or earlier than that and do not care to for what they charge.
I priced out def leppard and another 80s group metal rock band were locally wanted to go see and cheapest nose bleed seats were 80 bucks each - NO thanks.   uglystupid2

Selfies, to me, are.... I am the center of my universe, I am wonderful, and it's all about me.  There's a lot of that going around.

I see myself in the mirror every day.  I'm pretty sure I'm not getting any better looking and I have not forgotten what I look like..... so I don't need any pictures of myself.

I am reminded of Rodney Dangerfield who said something like.... The wife and I tried having sex with the lights on, but after we took our clothes off we couldn't stop laughing.

I call them "SelfME's"

Seriously, get over yourself.

It reminds of the wedding photographer that dictates the wedding, for the pictures.

To busy taking pictures to have fun.

That hits a cord.  Overseas, my mo-in-law (or as I liked to call her, the Sergent Major) hired a videographer to do my wedding.  They had a light bar off a 747.  People understood doing the service, but they apparently intended to blind (and heat) everyone all night, and people complained.  I told them to quit, and they did.  She told them to resume, and they did.  So I went over and pulled their two main HD power cords, and cut the plugs off with my spyderco.  That did it.

Save money and take your picture of yourself at home. I usually take pictures of the scenery where I am. I know what I look like and the pictures in the post office do not do me justice.
Ego (selfie) sticks would be fine if I had the invention and patent.

I remember when me and my wife were going to the wedding of my youngest brother.

We showed up and he came up to us and said their photographer had canceled on them and could we do the pictures ?  Fortunately, we had just about all our photography equipment ( 2 canon 35mm film cameras (this was WELL before digital cameras), flashes, and a selection of lenses, a tripod, some other misc flash gear to get the flash off the camera), so were able to do it (actually, I think we did pretty good, especially for a no-notice job). I hope we didn't "take over" the wedding on them.

Now - we don't have as much equipment for the digital SLR, but I think we could just as good a job with what we do have. Gotta have that dedicated flash that is not built into the camera.
