We were in Texas before Christmas and O2S and I were out looking. Pulled into a H D dealer and found a bike that I liked. (I told O2S not to say anything about the Valks)  I looked around and asked if there was a sales person here. Some guy younger than me walked sorta near us (I just had a shower) and I had to ask if he was working here. Yeah , what do you want. This bike without the faring  , but the same color. I got this one. "No" I want this color. without the faring. Maybe I'll see if there is one somewhere. After I read" War and Peace", he came back and said he found one. I had to pry the answers out of him.  This is the third time at a H D dealer that I could not get waited on. I am trying to buy and they do not want to sell. I never even asked the price.

I am thinking what they pay only gets them noobs and low-averages in sales.  Or there might be one good knowledgeable guy and five noobs (and you are not finding the good one).

My only positive experience at bike dealers has been in service...... sales is a comedy act, or the old plaid pants hard sell (metric dealers, I'll never be buying a new HOG).

This is the universe telling you to not buy a Harley!  Grin
There are so many better alternatives in the V twin world these days that are actually dependable, well built motorcycles. Indian, Victory, heck even Star.

If you are dead set on a V-Twin why not look at the Indian line up then? At least its not another ho-hum-Harley.

But no other motorcycle manufacturer come close to the technological advances in marketing and apparel technology than Harley-Davidson.

Yah, would go Victory/Polaris v-twin over HD and Indian, cheaper and just as good I believe in my opinion.  I really like the looks of the Victory cross country tourer.

I bought an Indian Chieftain about a year ago and it was nearly $30k out the door w/add-ons--yes I paid full retail--it was for the wife-anyway--the fit/finish/styling/torque/braking/braking/handling/ride is outstanding-the dealer/stealers are just that...to squeeze some more juice out of the motor is astronomical-the $250 oil change??OK I drive some very nice cars..and go to the quick change/walmart places..and run Mobil -1--$50??

congrats, enjoy it on the 30K Indian.  At that price it oughta be top notch and almost drive itself, but what fun would that be?   Roll Eyes

Here I am bitching about in another thread being ripped off 300 bucks on a tablet which I will be fighting with my credit card company if it comes down to it since both of us were lied to upfront?   Cry

The hat is very important its been my experience that soon as you get a Harley you get a big head and suddenly become better than anyone who does not ride a HD.

Or the HD logo leather bra and panties the misses MUST wear, along with your assless chaps... 2funny

I find it funny HD riders get all dressed up looking the image but 95% do not wear a helmet around where I live vs. me riding in hot summer with tshirt and shorts/tennis shoes but with a helmet?   coolsmiley  I guess I do not dress appropriately either for proper protection, but then again,  not fitting into 'the cool image factor' either.   Undecided

Now I do find my closet is full of HD & Sturgis rally shirts. I get them at 'places' when I travel such as Beartooth HD in Red Lodge MT which is the beginning of Beartooth Pass and Beartooth HD in Cody WY which is the east entrance to Yellowstone. Honda sure don't make 'exciting' shirts.

Im guessing half of the Valks that go to Billings this yr will stop at least one of the mentioned places.  Wink

I was 'interested' in a Road Glide about 5 yrs ago. Salesman asked what I rode and told him. He said 'oh...ummm...keep the valk and don't get a HD'.  Grin

Didn't you realize that buying a HD is a privilege??  Plus, you didn't give him the secret poser handshake upon arrival, so he didn't want to even give you the time of day....what were you thinking???   2funny 2funny 2funny

I'm not on a Harley today because of the dealer. Way back in 1977 when I bought my first GoldWing, I wasn't greatly enamoured with it. I pulled up the the HD dealer to see an Electra Glide. When I got off the Wing, the owner walked out the front door and said, "Get that Japanese piece of crap off my lot". I said, "Fine" and left. After he passed the dealership off to his son, I decided to try again. HD had recently introduced the Road King (this was in 99). He said the price was $2000 OVER list price. I thought paying him for the privilege of paying full price for a bike was ridiculous. I went to the Honda dealer who knew I was going to buy a Road King. He asked where the RK was so I told him the story. He showed me the 98 Valk Tourer he had on the floor. I knew about the bike and asked the price. His response? "How about $2000 under MSRP?" I've been riding it for the past 18 years. I recently mentioned to him that selling me tha Valk turned out to be a terrible business decision for him since he hasn't sold me another big road bike in that 18 years.

I've posted on here before about my experiences in our local HD dealer...under two different  owners.  Same result as you.

I know a couple members of the local Harley club. They have a few charity rides a year but other than that, they don't ride. A couple of them had sons my sons age, they played football together. I told them my wife and I were riding to Calgary, Edmonton, etc (about 8-10 hour rides each way) to go to the games, we asked if they wanted to ride together. They looked at us like we were freaking nuts. And what if it rains, they said.  2funny

They sure dressed like bikers. But they weren't riders.

Anyone who rides has my respect, no matter what they ride.

I do go to the local Harley dealer occasionally (I do like their blue jeans). I get looks from the other riders when I pull up...some looks of smugness, some of shame and some of admiratipn(from those who know bikes).  Luckily I care very little what others think.

Every year my friends and I go to Ocean City Maryland for their bikefest in September. I meet them down there at the hotel because they trailer there HD's  and I ride my Valkyrie. Once there they take them off the trailer and ride them up and down the main drag. That will tell you all you need to know!

Yeah and I bet they put on dirty looking clothes too 2funny I find those folks funny 2funny
I was talking to a patient one day who had been in a MC accident and was talking about riding and he ask if I rode and I said yes and told him I had just gotten back from  Colorado the week before and he said man what do you ride? I have never been over a couple hundred miles from home so I told him and he got a funny look on his face but before he could respond I told him don't worry many people don't actually ride their bikes 2funny and then told him that when I had my Street glide I had ridden it to Key West and to the Mexico border and to Niagra Falls all in the same year :coolsmiley:he ask why I didn't have it anymore and I just said it felt to be under powered and that I had just gotten caught up in HD while riding with friends who all had them and realized I had the best MC on the planet (IMHO) already sitting in my garage, he was kinda speechless after that Roll Eyes

You all remember , I work on HD's . I doubt if I would ever buy a new one. I liked the one I saw , but at $29,000 it will not happen. The riding garb is extra.   I really do not know what it is with them. I will not beg someone to let me spend my money. At the Indian dealer , we were greeted and treated well. At Honda , they were more than thankful for us to stop in.
Y E S . we were fishing. I wanted to compare the treatment and to have four dealers in a short distance made it easy.
