I've been eyeballing various lights that could be mounted to the back of my helmet, and not need me to wire into the bike. Found this while looking through the CES exhibits.

Would you use it?

Pretty interesting, I dont know if I would use it on a helmet but what about on the bike somewhere pretty high?

It's interesting, but I'd probably forget to charge it. Smiley

A lot of us are already pretty well lit up in back.

But for the guy who rides a single tail light, this is a good idea.

I think my wife might get pissed having a red strobe light in her eyes. Seriously though, it's not a bad idea. I just doubt I would use it.

My concern with all of these things that mount on the helmet is do they harm the protection offered by a helmet in the event of an accident. Michael Schumaker's head injury was caused by his helmet camera mounting pushing through the side of his helmet, whist not a motorcycle helmet it shows that there is a potential problem.

Anything that makes us safer is a good thing although I am not keen on mounting something like this as an after market item. Maybe helmet manufacturers will start to build it in in the future.

The light is a good idea but 8 hrs before charging is too short and of course that's a best case measure. Would prefer if there was one of those high-tech chargers that uses proximity w/o plugging it in, then lasts much longer.  Secondly, don't care for the geo-location and automatic reporting of accidents.  Don't care for ANY tech that tracks me and can call in.  Privacy violation, potential abuse; if it can be abused it will.  If the tech exists some ahole liberal politicians will mandate it.  Bad enough that exists on phones; I for damn sure won't buy any car with On-Star or the like.  I'm afraid they all will or do have that now w/o disclosure.  More visibility is a good thing - so my bikes except George have a LOT of light added front and rear.  Jackets with reflective piping and 2" bands; hi-vis helmets; bright LED lights instead of tungsten, flashing brake light controllers and add'l light fixtures are all a good idea.  As well as practices such as leaving the bike in gear, stopping on the side of the lane, and watching the mirrors at red lights are all good.  BTW it's easy to wire in a brake flasher yourself, and set it to your favorite custom flash pattern yourself with the $11 timer relay I reported here last month - get one here or even cheaper on ebay: http://www.3rdbrakeflasher.com/my-link-ezp-15.html

If it's was just a light at half the cost I'd consider it.  Probably won't be long before competition drives the price of these kind of thing down.

Not a new idea.

Here's one from 2013

http://www.roadrunner.travel/2013/09/07/third-eye-design-helmet-mounted-brake-light-and-turn-signal/

I've never seen one on a helmet. Maybe cause it's not such a good idea.

Fall off at speed and hit the back of your head to have it driven into your helmet?

Yeah yeah I know it will break off.

But that one unlucky rider who hits the light exactly right to drive it into his helmet.....................

How many of us can swear hand on heart that we are able to keep our heads perfectly still and upright apart from braking.

Accelerating with vim and vigor?

Crappy bumpy roads?

Strong side winds?

Blustery head winds?

You'd be going down the road looking like you had the ghost of Samuel Morse riding passenger.

Would you use it?

Nope

I prefer lighting up the ass end of the fat lady with more/better lighting.   Just my preference.
