May I suggest if you really do have 3 feet of snow on your house roof to go buy a long roof snow rake to get almost all of it off your roof BEFORE another 2-3 feet of snow come down or you could have a partially collapsed roof. You probably already know, but the roof rake bringing down say 1/2 your roof upwards scraping it off comes down with a HUGE BOOM and is like heavy concrete once it hits the ground, just be sure to not stand down where it comes sliding down, be safe. I have done my house just in case even with 2 feet or so of snow on my roof, to have 3 feet then another 2-3 feet on any roof is asking for trouble. Time to invest in a good snowmobile to have some fun in that kind of snow, as well as a good snowblower...

I feel your pain, literally. Close to 3 feet from this storm, and -29 below predicted tonight. And winter has just begun.
I've lived here most of my life. Always been a shovel guy, have a small bent handle one for detail work and a huge blue "dump truck" shovel. This storm blew out my bad shoulder, and tweaked my knee. I've been telling myself for years I don't want to splurge on a snowblower that's only used for the huge storms. This mega storm has convinced me that cost is not an object!

I gotta be honest, we don't get all that much snow in KY but, those two blizzards we had two years ago convinced me, I needed help. I have a lot of concrete driveway and sidewalks to clear. I consider my snow blower similar to insurance. I hope I never need it but, will use it when it's needed. Currently, we've got about four inches on the ground. For some reason, I become extremely popular during such events.

That temp reminds me of my last station in the USAF....Loring AFB, Maine, just outside of Caribou. It's about 40 miles from the north end of US1. In winter, back in the early 60's, it was not unusual to have -35 to -40 temps....not wind chill, actual temp. You might get your car started but that didn't mean it was going to move, had to let it all warm up for a while. Even then your tire(s) might break if you hit a rock or a rut real hard. Now ask why I live in central Florida.

yah, anything over 5-6 inches and I use my snowblower. So far, only twice this winter have used it.
If under 4 inches, I can shovel my driveway much quicker and better than a snowblower.

We got nearly a foot of snow here in The Republic! The kiddos finally got to try the sleds my mom got 'em for Christmas 2 years ago... It did admittedly make the sunrise in the back yard kinda purdy this morning at least... (And I got up to the thermometer reading 9 degrees this morning... Burrrrr! Ya'll can keep this, luckily we'll be back into the 60's and 70's in a few days, I don't see how ya'll do this for months at a time?!?!?!)

The prediction is for close to single digits overnight , and close to or below zero F Monday Morning - It doesn't usually get that cold here. If I can get the 2 diesel VWs started monday, that will be the coldest we have ever started them (that said - it should not be any big deal). +1 on "Hurry up Spring !"

Woke up this morning and thought I was in Wyoming. Wind, snow falling sideways, temps in the middle teens. Moved several inches when I got up, doesn't look like I did anything. This snow is on top of 15" of white that fell earlier this week. Temps have been in the single digits for a couple days, lows below zero. Nothing has melted like it normally does. I have some pretty good size piles of snow along side the driveway. Glad I am as tall as I am, but getting hard to throw snow over the piles. Have thought of snow blower, but don't really need it as this winter is not normal. Now the weather folks are saying that there is a warm front coming with lots of rain. Could be interesting few days. AND I HAVEN'T BEEN FOR A RIDE SINCE EARLY DECEMBER AND BEGINING TO GET THE SHAKES.

We got nearly a foot of snow here in The Republic! Now that's funny! -24F real temp at 10:15 am here. Weather lady says another 12-18" (vertical inches, Serk) coming beginning Sunday night. If nobody hears from me again it's been real.

Thunderstorms from late last night through past sunrise this morning. Inch plus of rain. Leaves are almost all off the Sycamore in the front yard now, you would think it's Fall or something. Going to be a wet 58f here today. Actually about the coldest it has been here so far. Forecast is to see colder temps tonight and tomorrow though. Our one day of Winter may be here?

Do you have to have a heater installed on them or are they in a heated garage? Neither - but VW does test them up in interior Alaska / Canada in the winter. Zero isn't even a stretch - people start them in -30 regularly without garage / heaters. Big keys on modern diesels - #1 - Good battery #2 - oil rated to be more fluid in the cold (5w<30 or 40> is recommended) #3 - Good fuel (gel point colder than expected conditions - local and/or treated fuel) #4 - Follow the starting procedure religiously ( more important on the 2000 than the 2015 - the '15 takes care of itself ) I've been driving one since March 2003 - my previous cold record was 8F in Kentucky on a road trip, staying at a hotel with the wife. Car started fine, was a little rough for the first couple minutes. Took FOREVER to get heat in the cabin - later figured out that I should have closed the recirc vent.

just be glad our furnaces kicking on every 5-15 minutes keep working has been -5 degree temps at night or colder for past several days with frost on inside of our patio door and inside of corner of windows inside the house. Now, I hear bismark ND, with in my eyes ND is the worst COLD state, is having -39 below zero. Been there, done that ONLY once in Devils Lake ND outside all day long ice fishing for 3 days straight, NEVER again having eyelashes freezing shut on me for some stupid perch that were NOT biting due to the cold front had lockjaw all 3 days, next day leaving was sunny and into 20s again, go figure? Feel sorry for you VA, MA guys getting so much snow, that is nuts as well pretty much anything over 15 inch snowfall is rough going sometimes. WI only two snowfalls pretty much 5-6 inchs each so far anyways, can deal with that. Bitter cold is starting to tick me off though would love to see the 20's again HEAT WAVE.

for all of us in the COLD winter belt, what do all of you set your thermostat at for heat?
Wife and kids are bitching at me I set it at 67 degrees is fine for me, but they are freezing inside house, plus I have more insulation, but the furnace is already running every 15 minutes or so to maintian 67 degrees. My mom has her house at 71 degrees being older in her 70s, and that is VERY HOT in her house gas furnace runs every 5 minutes under say 20 degrees out.
At night after 10 pm., I set it down to 64 degrees since bundled up in bed under heated blankets.

Wood burning stove! Such a love/hate relationship with it, but there is nothing like the heat quality. Indoor/outdoor thermometer showed -31F outside this morning, 72 inside. Our wood burner has a 1 1/2 - 2 hr. burn time, but I keep it going overnight. Warmth over sleep.

12F for the overnight low - USUALLY I let the thermostat go down to 67 over night, due to the cold (and our bedroom at 63) set it back to 70, will probably do the same thing tonight.
HVAC system - (we have a heatpump with propane furnace backup ) - call for heat, heatpump goes on - finally figures out that heat pump can't do it, kicks on furnace, warms house back to 70. Wash , rinse, repeat. Tempted to program thermostat to just use furnace / or set to emergency.
Edit - set thermostat to emergency - and overnight temp setting to 70 - cold is for those that are more hard core than me !!!!

Been in -81 & -82 wind chill at Grand Forks AFB. And here in Wi. another time and that is a reall MF.You don't go out unless your stupid and have servival gear on. This minus temp stuff isn't all that real bad I'd say down to minus 25 unless the wind is blowing. As soon as that wind starts it goes right though ya an then 5 above gets hatred.

agree entirely on the cold wind being 20 mph on up in winter. I would rather have -5 temp with 5 mph winds vs. 15 above with 30 mph winds. Never heard of -75 to -80 ever in WI, only -35 with wind chill or so. Been out to ND and is much worse than WI I think overall day to day in winter.

Cookie dough you have a little nicer weather than us but let's just say most of the time. I love it when those storms tack south ha ha. We had some minus temps this last week here but hardly no wind. We are pretty lucky here with the snow this year as I can still drive around in the fields, gotta love it. Old man winter has been very kind to us so far this winter.

Have thought of snow blower, but don't really need it as this winter is not normal.
I said the same thing for years.............. That is, until they found me face down in the snow. I'm telling you brother, a snow blower is just like insurance. You never want to need to use it but thank God you have it when you have to. In about a year or so, we might move south, I'm talking way south. My snow blower will be available then. It's barely used but always ready. Edited to add: Spent most of the day outside working on a trailer, out in the open. Thankfully, the sun was shining but damn my toes got cold. Been warming them up all evening. Thank goodness Bowser likes to lay at my feet.

Several places said they can't give an estimate when they'll have more in stock, and they have waiting lists and backorders. I ordered a Husqvarna ST-224 from an eBay dealer today. It will arrive too late to help me with this storm, but it will be welcomed with open (and very sore) arms when it comes.
