An amp will be too much for the stock speakers. If you replace the speakers with the plk db501 an amp will make them soumd much better. I have the polks with a rockford pbr300 mounted in the fairing. No amp will be plug and play. You will have to splice into the stock wiring for the speakers from the head unit run the wires to the amp and then from the amp back to the speakers. Will also have to run power and ground wire from amp to battery. I put mine on a relay so it kills all power with the key. Pretty easy if you know anything at all about wiring. There is small cheap amps on the market but I wouldn't put any amp on the stock speakers, you will blow them and end up replacing them. The stock ones are like a cardboard material.

OEM are 4 ohm, and most others are 8 ohm.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing, replace my front speakers and then add a small inexpensive amp so I can have better sound.

yah, my stock I/S speakers are iffy at best, not horrible, but definitely not very good.  Sounds better thru my mp3 player by far volume on mp3 player cranked volume all the way and MORE BASS for sure.  If you play the FM radio stations they pretty much suck for the most part except maybe 2-3 local, close FM stations.

I also have taking up valuable space in my top I/S trunk a clarion 6 disc CD changer which works very loud/well and amps up somewhat the so-so speakers.  ONLY issue I have is over bumps in the road, the CD skips or stops for a split second and then continues playing even after loosening it up putting foam sealant tape around all over to cushion the playing unit.  I need to figure out how to disconnect all the wiring and unit itself and sell it for I have only used it a handful of times in 7 years.  Not that I could get much for it though probably?  It came on the bike when I bought it when CD players were all the vibe at the time to have.  NOW,  a lot of new vehicles as standard eqmt. does not have a CD player charging you 150-300 bucks extra to get one installed from the factory.

can I ask, where exactly in the fairing did you mount the amp? I bought an I/S last year, and it is definite need of a sound upgrade.

i took the shell and headlight off and made a aluminum plate that i screwed onto the fairing mounting brackets. wish i would have taken a picture. I had one under the seat and it got too hot and fried. Mine is about the size of 2 decks of cards side by side.

I just bought a Boss Audio 800W amp. I plan to put it in the fairing.
Compact, waterproof, good reviews.
Already put the Polk speakers in, they are an improvement, marine quality and water resistant. Definitely sound better than stock!
Stock speakers are paper, and mostly crappy when new.
Paper deteriorates over time, especially when exposed to the elements.
Do yourself a favor and replace your crappy 20 year old paper speakers!
