Pretty interesting and there are quite a few places like that around the world. I recently looked at a site that had a castle abandoned in France. I used to love exploring places like that when I was a kid.

I love Urban Exploration.  In the city of Gary Indiana you can obtain a permit to explore their abandoned properties.  Best $50 I ever spent.
We did the Mercy Hospital (creepy and strange).  And some strange things certainly happened during our exploration of it.
Also did the severely damaged Lutheran Church that was mostly damaged by the arson of a decade ago.

We were planning on the old theatre, but my gut instinct about the neighborhood put me off until I could return with a couple of more people to do explore it with me.

Want to elaborate on the strange things.  I always find this interesting.

Sure, but they are hard to believe.
1st off, I had 3 cameras with me.  The Nikon refused to focus when inside the hospital with more than adequate light, even though it worked fine outside.  And the menus didn't work correctly.  The other two cameras and our cell phones worked fine.
My niece and I were at the entrance to a room and we both could see my breath.  She was about 4 feet away and her breath was not visible.  Temperature was 70 degrees or so and not humid.  Neither of us felt a change in temperature.  And the phenomenon never repeated.
The hospital had no power at all.  Every fuse block we came to was totally ripped out.  But, on 3 occasions the fire alarm strobe lights flashed as we passed them.  Twice in a stairway, and once in an interior hallway.

If you get a chance, go to youtube and look up Mercy Hospital in Gary Indiana.  There are lots of videos on urban exploration of that building.  Some of those videos document other odd things.  Like static coming from the PA speakers.  We didn't experience that.

Thanks a bunch.  From what you described that place is haunted for sure. Neat experiences to say the least.  I will look it up, maybe this evening.

When the Exorcist first came out 73,74? me and a couple of buddies went down the road to watch.  All during the movie, from time to time the chair behind me would squeak like someone was getting in or out of the seat.  Every time I would look back there was no one for five rows back, yet this was right behind me.   Maybe five years ago I was looking at haunted places in Michigan and there was that theater.  There were about 150 comments,  typical skeptards no nothings  saying hoey but 3/4 of comments were from people who had experienced so called paranormal ( no such thing it is normal but extremely difficult to study and quantify, at least for now ) goings on with half of the comments coming from people that had worked there and were most serious of what they had seen and experienced especially after the theater closed.

Wow, that video on Chanute AFB brought back some memories. I walked those halls nearly 60 yrs. ago, my second daughter was born in that hospital. Time marches on! I went through missile school there, got in trouble falling asleep in class. Also got a certificate for being the so-called valedictorian of the group. Must have learned something in there.  Roll Eyes

I thought so at the time, I beat out a guy that was reputed to have a photographic memory. That was mixed in with an above average IQ we were told. Big deal, a lot of us do. He was a nice guy but didn't have a lick of common sense. He could quote you chapter and paragraph of just about anything in the manuals, explain it in detail. His problem....he had no clue how to put it to use, couldn't even turn on the mock-up unless someone did it for him. I ran into a lot of people that were just like him at Argonne Nat'l. Labs southwest of Chicago....really smart, IQ's in the stratosphere, couldn't change the lead in their mechanical pencil. One mathematician ordered a new pencil sharpener, sent it back because it didn't work. Someone showed him how to plug it in.  uglystupid2

I almost pulled something similar many years ago. I was flying north out of Sarasota, headed for Peter O'Knight a/p which is on a peninsula on the south side of Tampa, right on the bay. But, so is McDill AFB. As I approached I'm thinking "I don't recall the runways being quite so long." Then suddenly off to my left I see this huge AF cargo plane on approach to McDill....that's when it dawned on me I was about to make a HUGE mistake. I peeled off to the east and flew straight up the bay, meanwhile being verbally assaulted on the radio for not following instructions. That's when I told them I was, in fact, following the last heading they had given me. The radio went silent, then another voice chimed in with an apology and heading changes. Disaster averted but it sure could have become rather "interesting" in short order.

If you look on Google Earth, you can see that McDill and P O'K line up perfectly if you're coming north along the coastline then turn a bit NE.

Apparently, you're in good company.

Several others have confused the two airports.

I hope this isn't consider a hijack of the thread but in our area (about 30 min south) this old AT&T transmitting station recently got some news.

Yes indeed, I did the exact thing several years ago.  I was cleared to land and as I descended, I was looking out thinking why are all those phantoms and C-130s parked on the ramp.

I remember that incident, rather embarrassing for the flight crew but an easy mistake to make if you're approaching from the NE. Those two a/p line up perfectly and you need to pay attention.
