I've been watching Moonshiners on TV. Just how true is the show? It's hard to believe that they are making real moonshine and being filmed. Isn't that like asking to go to prison.

Honestly can't say, my only source for shine passed away last year. Still looking for another quality source though. He produced only the best (I'm told) and always taste tested his product. According to all known sources, they don't expect his pickled body to turn to dust until late in the next century. Must have done a significant amount of tasting.

Just like all the other "Reality" shows!! Fake as fake can be! That's like the players are facing certain death, and no one around to save them in their peril.....except the director, producers, camera crew, and lighting crew!! All real life shows are scripted, fake, false, and for entertainment purposes only! Hate to drop the maul on some non-believers; but wrestling is fake too!

The only two I enjoy are Gold Rush & Deadliest Catch. I'm sure that some of the drama is staged, but the meat of the job, is the meat of the job. I believe they make too much money doing the job to let the show get in the way, but that could be wrong these days. A buddy of mine makes a little shine from time to time. Pretty good stuff. I know now why they say "Three fights ta every pint"

I know now why they say "Three fights ta every pint" I watched the first couple seasons of Gold Rush. I really liked the young kid and his Grandpa. I can't remember their names. Lost interest with all the drama from the Petersons. The Deadliest Catch was a good show . When Capt. Phil died I kind of lost interest.

Well, the kids a millionaire and unfortunately, his Grandpa passed.
The show hooked up with this fouled mouthed Swed that is revitalizing the old dredge digging machines with the help of his wife and three kids. They winter in AZ somewhere.
I think you mean the Hoffmans, they've had a bad season so far.

Fer f's sake it's a REALITY TV show.
The crap is fake. Nonsense. Bollocks. Not to be believed. Rubbish. Brain draining. Cranium crushing. IQ reducing.
A few years ago I posted a link to a Canadian production company that had 72 REALITY TV SHOWS IN PRODUCTION to use in the USA market.

Don't hold back, tell us how you really feel It's ENTERTAINMENT. That's how I look at the two shows that have my interest. Some of it may be staged but they ain't moving hundreds of thousands yards of dirt for TV. I know a lot more about crab fishing and gold mining then I did 5 years ago and I never even heard of a floating dredge machine till last year. I also liked that Canadian that would go out in the woods by himself for a week, Survivorman I think. He was good.

Yep just like plonker Bear Grhylls out in the wilderness and then heading back to the hotel at night. How did Survivorman shoot all the footage needed? What powered his cameras. How did he recharge the batteries? How did he carry all his supplies, sound equipment as he moved from one location to the next and enough batteries and on and on and on. All you had was his word that what he was doing was real. Just a regular guy who went and did a load of recording and then managed to sell it to a production company who tidied it all up for broadcast. Yep I'm a cynic.

plonker Bear Grhylls That I'll agree with, except I'm not really sure what a "plonker" is Survivorman, Les I think that was his name. In his show, he showed how he would have to set the camera up, do a walk thru shot, then go back and get the equipment. He also showed all the problems he had with the equipment, due to being limited in the amount he had. Doesn't seem like his show was heavily edited, so he probably didn't need a lot of film footage. He would do lots of research about the area before he went in, or so he said. And you're right, we only have his word he did it as advertised, but him, I believe.

I don't like and won't watch most reality shows.
But if the subject matter is interesting to me (like building/making things), I might watch and learn something about the subject matter, even if the story line is made up (hooey). I might also watch just to see the geography/beauty of the shoot location. But if the hooey gets too deep, concocted or they start arguing (especially about any kind of deadline for completion, of anything), then I'll hit the remote and find an old Leave it to Beaver.
I've watched almost all those shows and have yet to see an actual beaver. Then again, with June Cleaver, I'd probably be reaching for the remote again. If my name was Beaver Cleaver, I'd smack my parents.

Moonshiners is as fake as fake gets but still entertaining. Yes i watch it sometimes. I do not miss Gold Rush. Watch it every friday night. Alone is ok, just couldn't get into it. I saw a documentary about moonshiners a couple years ago that was saying they showed you everything to put into it but actually drained it and just put water in and all they were getting was water vapor out. I have had Tim Smiths moonshine. He was in town a couple years ago and my dad got a picture with him at Dairy Queen. I'll see if I can find it and post it.

I believe it is legal to sell shine IF the requisite federal taxes are collected and paid. That is why you now see 'shine for sale in liquor stores.

That's nothing more then white whiskey. In the United States, alcohol content is measured in terms of the percentage of alcohol by volume. The Code of Federal Regulations (27 CFR [4-1-03 Edition] §5.37 Alcohol content) requires that liquor labels must state the percentage of ABV. The regulation permits, but does not require, a statement of the proof provided that it is printed close to the ABV number.[6] For bottled spirits over 100 mL containing no solids, actual alcohol content is allowed to vary within 0.15% of ABV stated on the label.[3] Alcohol proof in the United States is defined as twice the percentage of alcohol by volume. Consequently, 100-proof whiskey contains 50% alcohol by volume; 86-proof whiskey contains 43% alcohol.[3] In the United States the term "degrees proof" is normally not used. For example, 50% ABV would be described as "100 proof" rather than "100 degrees proof". Wild Turkey has a 110 proof Russel's Reserve Single Barrel Some states have different "proof" laws Arizona - Everclear Grain Alcohol Proof 190 (95% alcohol) is legal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everclear_(alcohol)

I concur on if it was REAL, then they all should be in jail right selling and making larger amounts of moonshine? why are they not in jail then right? Sort of like Street Outlaws which I find very interesting to watch. It is illegal to do in Oklahoma (and all over probably), but they do it on national TV and if so, why are they not arrested then with 2000 hp vehicles doing 140 mph in 1/8th mile?? I also like watching NAKED AND AFRAID at all the cute girls butts/// I also like TV show Ice Road Truckers and Dirty Jobs and Alaskan Frontier and The Brown family who lives in Alaska in the wild. Can you say I watch WAY too much TV??? ???

Can't stand the Brown family. That Bear is dork, but he is extreme! A dentist would make good money hanging around with them. The way my southern cousin explains Moonshiners to me is that: the product you see produced is nothing more than water, they sell and transport the same. Not illegal by any shake. I asked if it wasn't illegal to own / operate a still? He said yes, but law enforcement doesn't screw with these people only because they are producing only water. He said they are only interested in the production of the real thing. I asked him if there was an arrangement between local law enforcement and production of the program? He said, all I can say is that it's has been taken care of. I didn't push on him too much. If this is true, (and he has no reason to lie) it explains why no one is busted except for the real deal. Dan is a LEO in an area where this is filmed.

I'm pretty sure that everclear is legal in Georgia and South Carolina and most states, only illegal in about 15 states...
I remember kids hurting themselves with it in college and PJ parties... a trash can lined with a plastic trash bag filled with koolaid (or some such) with a (some?) bottle(s) of everclear mixed in...

Jungle Juice? We use to make it with several bottles of everclear, a case of beer, fruit punch and a bunch of fruit mixed in. let it sit over night and drink it the next day. Eating several pieces of fruit would put you on your ass.

Garbage can or trash parties will make you talk to yourself. Ours were a new can and the people invited would BYO. Whatever it was then was dumped into the can and that concoction was the nights swill. Boy, that was some good stuff!

BYO and dump in the can. Then we graduated to margarita parties. No more of that now.
