Hey folks. The wife is taking a vacation to South Carolina with her Mom soon.

I know their Indiana carry permits are not recognized by South Carolina.  But, I was thinking that even without a permit a citizen could carry a loaded handgun in the car with them in that state. Am I right or am I thinking of another state?

Thanks in advance, I couldn't find anything about this online.

no permit is required to carry a loaded handgun in the console or glove compartment of a car.

If I DON’T have a concealed weapons permit, where can I carry a handgun in my vehicle?

You may carry a handgun in a vehicle if secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, closed trunk, or in a closed container secured by an integral fastener and transported in the luggage compartment of the vehicle.

Seems like you'd rather see it on the SLED web page rather than the wiki or a lawyer's
web page, but it seems you are correct in your thinking...

In my carry class I learned that a ziplock baggie, like you keep you lunch sandwich in, counts as
a closed container secured by an integral fastener Smiley

That waterhead governor they have down there is more worried about getting rid of the Confederate Flag than she is paving roads , protecting her citizens and tourist who spend money in her state .

Here it is from sled:

It is unlawful for anyone to carry about the person any pistol, whether concealed or not, except as follows:
...
9) Any person in a vehicle where the pistol is secured in a closed glove compartment, closed console, or closed trunk.

I learned the SC law from a license check in SC some years ago. NC
requires it to be in plain view. So I had the P-85 on the dash.
After looking at my license and asking a few questions I got worried
he hadn't seen the gun. So I asked if he saw it. He said yes then
explained it had to be concealed in SC. He agreed it was a bad law
but it is what it is. Told me he could take it and I would never see
it again but since I was from NC he cut me some slack. I put it in
the glovebox. Now with a concealed carry permit it's nice not having
to worry about it. He was a cool trooper.  police
