One more turn should do it!

Kent, Ohio

« on: January 30, 2017, 07:09:52 AM »

Thinking about taking a trip To: Georgia From: NE Oh. Leaving Ohio on Sat April 8th.
Looking for info from the guys that live between the two points. Hard to say what the weather will be liken here in Ohio. I have my fingers crossed it will be decent. I figure it cant be too bad for too long. I plan on heading southeast out of Ohio.
Im thinking of heading to Richmond, Va. then on to Jekyll Island, Ga.
I'm planning on staying off the interstate system. Use it only when absolutely necessary.
So if you can let me know what the weather is usually like in early April between Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh to Richmond, Va., Richmond to Greensboro, N Carolina, Greensboro to Charleston, S Car., Charleston to Jekyll island, Ga.
I haven't laid out the exact route. Looking for info on roads, areas and such to avoid. Going to use AAA TripTik to route my ride. Unless there is a better (bike / rider) friendly option?

Jekyll Island, that is interesting.  Where a secret plan was hatched ( I think in 2010 ) to make the largest financiers on the planet rich beyond there wildest dreams by bringing us the Federal Reserve System and go against what the founders were so strongly against, that being a direct income tax.  It was conducted in strict secret and even the hotel employees were forced to leave.  Even had to get a Constitutional Amendment 16th, passed to accomplish that using dirtiest tricks known.  Rothchilds, J P Morgan, and others brought it to us and it is Federal in name only - it is privately owned and caused the great recession not many years later.  Somewhere at the time Thomas Jefferson and Andy Jackson were screaming from beyond to bloody hell, but to no avail.

That is just a bit of history though and is certainly a place I would not mind riding to - those outer Georgia Islands.   April is historically lots of rain here in Ohio, but mild temps and I certainly hope  the sun which has been missing around here since November shines gloriously on your trip.  I envy you and best of luck.

Typically, April is decent weather temperature wise in the Tidewater region of Va.

The mountains can still be pretty cold in April.

We also do sometimes have snow in April, it can be a big one too.

The good news is that they don't usually stick around very long.

Unless, you just want to go to Richmond, I would suggest that you plan your route to pass through Roanoke, VA and then Greensboro, NC.

After Greensboro I would steer towards Rockingham, NC and Darlington, SC.

If not in a rush then the Skyline Drive and BRP all the way to Brevard, NC and then on to the coast via Washington and Savannah GA

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

When I went and picked up a trailer from Smokin Joe in TN I had crappy weather. It was the 2nd week of April. I left NE Ind in the morning and froze my ass off to the TN line then it finally hit 40 deg. Grabbed trailer and headed back.  About mid KY it got cold again. West central Ind it was all sleet and rain. I had 2 more hrs to go till I was home but got a room instead.

I wont do anymore trips till at least may. Good luck!

3Fan, curious on why you say Roanoke? Looking at TripTik I entered Roanoke as a second choice. No other reason than it seems more direct. Plus I'll be closer to 77 and 95 if needed.

Alpha, one of many things I love about Jekyl, the history!
The weather is my big concern that is for sure. At 54 riding in the cold and wet for extended periods of time does not appeal to me. This is in the planning stages only. Group of friends will be down at Jekyl that week golfing and I want to take a bike trip. With wanting to stay off the highways, it looks to be 3 comfy days of riding. 7-8 hours each day.
