Ride Safe, Be Kind

Earth

« on: February 01, 2017, 07:13:35 PM »

Hi All,

It's been a while since I've been active here. It used to be that I'd jump on the board first thing in the morning while drinking my coffee.  Forgive the novel, but here's why:

After returning from InZane last summer, I got really busy with work.  I do disaster relief professionally for the American Red Cross and I was sent to lake Isabella, CA for a wildfire, then to Louisiana for the flooding there.  When I got home, we immediately had a large wildfire in the northern part of L.A. county and just last week we were dealing with record rainfall topped off by an Avalanche in Crowley (near Mammoth).  Somewhere in there, I managed to do my day job of capacity building and disaster preparedness/response for a segment of Los Angeles County with a population of 2.2 million.

Somewhere along the way, I managed to tear a tendon in my knee, so lifting the Mothership off the side stand was a real challenge for a few months but I'm all healed up now.

Additionally, I've been in classes preparing for bariatric surgery.  There is nothing wrong with me besides my weight and I intend to keep it that way.  I will be undergoing Roux N Y gastric bypass surgery sometime in March or April.

The other reason that I've been absent is that I intentionally avoided the board during the election season.  Just really didn't want to hear it, you know?

That brings me to yesterday.  I noticed that InZane registration is open and I wasn't sure what I should do.  I've hopped on the board a few times in recent weeks, seen the political tide here and hopped back off.  I asked myself, since I'm one of the few liberals here and my kind is often hunted for sport in these posts ("liberal" etc..) , do I really want to continue to be a part of the VRCC?

Then I started thinking about all the great folks that I met at InZane last summer.  I don't recall talking politics with anyone besides Dirty Dan and it turned out that he and I had the same basic viewpoints and concerns, just coming at it from a different angle.  Everybody was cool and no one gave a damn what anyone else's politics were.

realizing that I can be as much of a dick at times as anyone else, I made my decision tonight.  Registration completed and room booked. The Mothership and I will be at InZane this year and Mrs. Alien is coming along as well (although, she is travelling by car.)

You are all good folks and I look forward to seeing you again in Montana.  Will I be as active here on the board as I once was?  Time will tell but I'll try to get on daily again.  I'm not going to agree with most of you politically and we aren't going to change each other's minds but we can be respectful to each other here, like we were in person.

And yes, for those wishing to collect on a bike wash, I will hold to my promise.

Ride Safe,

Alien

Good post  cooldude You've been missed. I felt much the same way going to my first Inzane in Spearfish. I was a little apprehensive, but there was little need for it. Good luck on the surgery. I hope you will do a blog again on your trip.  cooldude

Three years post-op Roux-En-Y as of this past November, and the spousal unit is coming up on 9 years post-op herself. Any questions or just wanna chat about it, lemme know, I love talking about it.

If you do the Facebook thing, this is a good support group too, it's about 80% female, but there's a few of us guys in there too:

Good for you.

I ignore most of those posts, doesn't concern me. But I think a lot of it is because people aren't discussing it face-to-face. If they did, I think it would be a lot more civil.

Like you mentioned, when you meet at other Rallies, no politics. I'm sure there was more talk of bike or just BS back and forth.

Another note, my wife went through bariatric surgery Feb 15, 2016, after 4 years leading up to it,  and has gone from 196# pre. to 150# post surgery. She's doing great. Off all her type 2 diabetes meds. A little more weight to go, but she seems to have a life worth living again. Now for the daughter, @ 270#.

Before you have that surgery, have you considered all the surgical options?   Been there, done that, know several folks who had the bypass version.    I went a different way, I chose to have the "Sleeve" version.   Be happy to discuss it with you over the phone.   PM me for my number if you wish to discuss.  While I didn't have the bypass, the folks I know tell me they wish they had done what I did.

BTW, I don't know if we had that wager, can't remember but, I'll be happy to get that bike wash.  Wink
