Dear friends

Finished reading this book:
https://www.amazon.com/River-Doubt-Theodore-Roosevelts-Darkest/dp/0767913736/

and can't recommend it enough. It is simply an amazing investigative work and nice writing style (a page turner I should say) about Ted's adventure exploring the countryside of Brazilian jungle 1912.

I won't give further details, but let's just say that "Together with his son Kermit and Brazil’s most famous explorer, Cândido Mariano da Silva Rondon, Roosevelt accomplished a feat so great that many at the time refused to believe it. In the process, he changed the map of the western hemisphere forever."

I am personally a fanboy of Ted, as I believe he incorporated some of the best american values:
a) Boldness;
b) Hard work;
c) Love for the outdoors;

The book is about 10 bucks and has quite a few nice photographs, definitely a good distraction for the last days of bad weather before riding season starts.
;-)

Made me look...

Roosevelt himself wrote a book about the trip, it is
available at Amazon.

The river is still in the middle of nowhere, PBS funded
a trip down it that retraced Roosevelt's steps in the 1990s.
I looked for the resulting PBS program about the trip, but
couldn't find it. There's is stuff about "the river of doubt" on
youtube, including a silent movie produced at the time that
was put on youtube by the Library of Congress...

One of the best this country has ever produced, a TRUE AMERICAN hero.

Thanks for the heads up, I'm going to check it out.

I will put it on my list.  Just a big fan of Teddy, as real as it gets.  There is a reason he in on Rushmore.

In my other big hobby there is a story that comes up in his book the Wilderness Hunter I have read a few times.   Teddy made a lot of enemies with the industry heads of this time.  On his next big adventure to Africa when told of it J P Morgan quipped, " Let every lion do his duty".

@hubcapsc The book that was written by Ted himself is titled "Through the Brazilian wilderness".

I'm half way through it.

It has good photos and it is interesting because was based on his diary, but is not as well written (as expected) as the other book I mentioned (that was written by a professional writer).

I would say it is complementary, but not a page turner really.

Hey Savago;

Just finished the book you suggested, "The River of Doubt"

Great story and history.  The hardship those men went through, in the name of exploration, is amazing.

Thanks for pointing me to it.
