Don't want to start a oil war, just want to know from those of you that use Mobile one, do you the 1qt motorcycle oil or the 5qt car oil?

Thanks, David in Fletcher NC

usually the big jugs are cheaper but ONLY need near 4 qts. not 5 qts. they come in.  I guess use the extra quart for next year?

check amazon.com for pricing I have bought 5 qt. jugs of car oil 5w-30 for around 20-21 bucks for 5 qts. full synthetic, but for my cars.   thinking about switching since Amsoil 10w-40 cycle oil just went up  with my local distributor was 10.55 per qt. now around 11.30 per qt. - OUCH!!!  over double of mobil 1 5 qt. jug.  ONLY good thing is 50 bucks for an oil change on cycle I only do once per year in November.

One still has to be careful, some Mobil 1 has the friction modifiers/energy saving doesn't it?

I wasn't aware of it. I've been buying the same stuff for a while. I'll have to start paying more attention.

FYI only.  My 2000  standard has only had Castrol 10W40 since I purchased it at 8k miles.  Now at 71k still have OEM clutch and runs trouble free.....no slippage.

Next year ? A quart of oil doesn't sit around here too long.

dont know about the mobil stuff as I have used the rotella T in the blue gallon container for many years now

Other than the quiet, I dont know if any oil is really better than the other

Oil filter I use the pure 1  it is a bit larger so the whole gallon goes in each oil change

I also use the rotella T6 in the blue big jug, but for my 2 Can Am atv's is made for diesel engines but am sure will be fine for the cycle as well.  If you have no issues with it,  I may end up switching next year since 50 bucks for 3-4000 miles all year riding with Amsoil is probably not worth it since the rotella t6 in big jug costs me only 15-20 bucks total locally.

Correct. You should see an icon like this on the label. Look for the bottom rocker, and if it says "Energy Conserving" do NOT put it in a vehicle with a wet-clutch (Like our Valks)

Actually that's what used the last time. I just have simple tastes. I like Canadian beer and I like synthetic oil. Used the Walmart brand for years.  cooldude

Do you know if any of the Mobil 1 has it ? I don't remember ever seeing it, but I don't look at all the variations.

Yes, some flavors or Mobil 1 do have friction modifiers; however I don't recall which ones, so just look for that rocker.

(Funnily enough I was looking at 'em just an hour or so ago at Wally Mart)

JASO-MA rating is wet clutch compatable in any oil. To each his own. I use Rotella T in everything.

If you want to check the status of your wet clutch and confirm the oil you are using is compatible with the clutch disks, try this:  on a road where you can run 4000 rpm in 4th gear, pin the throttle wide open and hold it there.....at the same time VERY quickly blip the clutch lever  (in and out).....the engine rpm will quickly jump to 6000 or so, but as the clutch re-engages it will pull the engine rpm back down in about 1-1 1/2 seconds to 4200-4400 or so.  If the rpm stays up at 6000 or so, the clutch is weak and slipping OR you are using the wrong oil and its causing the clutch to slip.....changing to a non-energy conserving oil will likely fix the slippage in a few thousand miles.......

And relax,,, this is not any worse than power shifting through the gears...... crazy2 crazy2

Mobil 1 15-50 Synthetic. 125000 showin on the clock and if you've ridden with me you Know I tend to ride a bit on the fast side on the big roads. Ask the other 6 Riders that followed me to Spearfish from Nebraska City.  Roll Eyes You Have to have Complete Faith in ALL aspects of your machine when you throw a leg over pull the clutch in snick er into gear ease the clutch out and follow the front wheel.  cooldude I've launched hard enough with out dumping the clutch to pull the front end off the ground More than a couple times. IF the oil I wuz using caused my clutch too even Consider slipping I could NOT git the front end off the ground!  Lips Sealed Friend of mine asked me after I did the wheely thingy how much my bike weighed. Said with me and the 'stuff" I carry bit north of 1100 pounds. RIDE SAFE.

In my case. first, second and third gear would solidly hook up.....4th gear at 4000 (max torque) would start to slip.  fifth gear did not slip....its a function of gear ratio and torque that puts the greatest chance of slippage in 4th at 4000.....

BTH, it was M1  15-50 I had used for 80K miles..... just saying

Went to Rotella 15-40, been fine for 150K miles

Exactly my experience but with the Mobil One so I stayed with the Mobil 1 motorcycle 20w50 oil and purolator filters and never had a problem.

I use Mobil 1 in everything: cars, trucks (diesel),motorcycles, lawn mowers.
15w50 or 15w40 (non energy conserving) in everything except some cars.
10w40 (energy conserving) in the other cars.

Never had any problems.

Picked up a box of this at Costco for the price - was $6/qt IIRC. It's the only weight they sell - but it should be OK for our Valkyries. Note they have changed the label, calling it "resource conserving" now.  It doesn't say "Extended Performance" on the label but it implies it with the chart and check mark and red-outlined paragraph below.  So does this have friction modifiers?  don't know.  The QR code doesn't map to a web page on my phone.

Best guess it is the same as energy conserving.
I think the only way to tell for sure is to look at the chemistry for moly in a quantity of more that 150 ppm.
Usually energy conserving shows up with 600 to 700 ppm.

The Mobil site is currently having issues and not showing the data.

Used Mobil 1 car oil for decades, in all my motorized vehicles and toys. 15-50 large jug for the bikes. No clutch problems, great performance. I even got 100,000 plus on two Harley Dressers, (an accomplish- meant to say the least.) Presently, 210,000 on an 08 Nissan Versa. (That 4-cyl engine burns about a half quart every 2K, but still sounds new) And my 2000 Interstate, and my present '03 standard love the stuff. The leftover quart from the 5-quart jugs goes into the mowers and snowblowers.  Mike in N.Y.

When you pick up your 5 qt jug at Wally World, ask they guys in the back for an empty quart oil container, then just pour off 1 quart and you're good.  If it's a different oil, just mark what it is on the label.

My experience with M1 20-50 ended  about 150K miles ago, so somewhere around 4-5 years ago. At the time I don't remember if we knew about the energy conserving label or did it even exist then. And no, it was not a 'motorcycle" labeled oil........straight from Walmart.  IMHO, buying $12 a quart motorcycle oil is nothing more that mental masturbation......does nothing for the bike....just makes the owner feel good.... crazy2 crazy2 crazy2 crazy2 crazy2 crazy2

I use Mobile 1 20/50 with a Mobile 1  M-110 oil filter. The filter is a little longer and allows me to put in exactly four quarts of oil.   It all works great for me on my 98 Standard.   Raymond
