I like to watch construction shows. I've stumbled onto a new one recently called Rough Cut--Woodworking with Tommy Mac. It might have been around for awhile, but I just found it a couple weeks ago. When I was 16 I helped my boss build his house one summer. I've found it interesting ever since, in a hobby sort of way. Anyway, while I was watching it today it dawned on me. I know this guy ! It's Bill (Hook). Same accent, same profession, same part of the country. He even looks like Hook. So I think I figured out how Bill is able to buy all his Valkyries. He's getting some huge royalties from PBS.  2funny

Just messing with you Bill. (I think)  Smiley

Actually, I've seen his show a couple of times.  I don't watch those shows that much.  It would be like you watching a meat cutting show.   Roll Eyes

He does a good job and his sidekick is really the knowledge/skill guy, like Norm was to that jerk Bob Vila.

Mac explains things well and provides a lot of shortcuts and tips.

The house next to mine was built on "This Old House" back in 1984.  I believe it was the first new construction on the show.

The owner, whose name was Bob also, told me Vila was a major jerk.

He would show up for taping, pick up a hammer, do a couple "Takes", then tell Bob what had to be done for the next time, not offering any other help, and leave.

I watched the complete season and you can see the chill in the air between them in the last episodes.

Norm on the other hand was great, according to the owner Bob.  Very knowledgeable, understanding and helpful, doing a lot of the work.

The house had a lot of issues, it's a "stressed skin panel" design and back then we didn't understand the importance of moisture venting.

I've replaced the siding, roof shingles, 4 Pella french doors and replaced the deck over the years.  The present owner is a great neighbor, the kind everyone wants, and has done a ton of upgrades.

The house is a great home now.

Vila had an office here on the Cape some years ago, built a couple of smaller properties. He had a home in Oyster Harbors, a definite upscale community on an 'island' in Osterville. I drove cab for a couple of years back in the day and witnessed an exchange between him and the guy in the gate house. I didn't realize it was Vila at the time, but I recall thinking 'what an incredible asshole'. Vila was driving a rental and the guy didn't recognize him and wouldn't let him through.

A friend of mine (secretary at my old airline) was his personal secretary for some years, and would tell me some real horror stories about him. No wonder he got crap-canned.

Sorry for the tangent, carry on...I love woodworking.....

I can totally understand why you don't watch those shows much. As to Bob Vila, I never understood why anybody liked him to begin with. Even for a novice like me, it was easy to see he was a tool. I'm going to have to check out what a stressed skin home is. I haven't heard of those.
On a side note, hope it's not too much longer before you can ride the new bobber.

I think driving a cab has got to be about the worst job. Those guys deserve their pay. When I was 13 I got a job at a mortuary . Lawn work and building caskets for the homeless to be buried in. Without a doubt my worst job. But I'd take that over driving a cab.

I always figured Villa was the talking head.

That preview reminds me of Norm (?), Old Yankee Workshop (?), and his "barn".

I wouldn't mind watching these kinds of shows again, always a wish list. I even went as far as buying a subscription for Woodsmith, which gave me access to ALL the old copies in PDF format. But with the passing of my father, and the age of his friends, nothing but drinking gets done in there garage woodshop. Miss those days, building and hanging. My interest moved over to biking with the wife.  Smiley

I tend to watch those shows also. I like working with wood, more so, metal though.

I've enjoyed watching Tommy Mac, I get a kick out of him.

Bob, that's a disservice to all the tools out there. Smiley
