Quite a few years ago the difference in the cost of gasoline grades at the pump changed from 5 cents to 10 cents.

Well the buggers have done it again.

No fanfare when they upped the difference to 20 cents. So now a gallon of reg is $2.15 and premium is $2.55.

87 to 91   (or 93) octane is about 60-70 cents difference in price around me which I think is a lot per gallon in difference in pricing.  I think last year, not 100% sure, it was only like 40-50 cents difference which seems more realistic what it should be.

I only use 91 octane NON ethanol in my not run often stuff like my snowblower and rototiller and gas weed eater, etc.  but my 250cc scooter calls for it as well unfortunately being a single cylinder and runs better with the higher premium gas as well as is recommended.

.60 - .70 difference is the best I can do around here. My VW GTI requires a "Top Tier Premium" but the F6B does just fine on 87 octane(as it was designed to do). $2.25 and $2.95 are the common prices this week.

The Mini requires High Test... I remember putting over $50
worth in it six or eight years ago when the gas prices
really spiked... I quit thinking about price per gallon and
started thinking about price per fill-up... it is about
$35 now...

Your gas prices can't be much lower than ours in SC... are you using
regular or something? I have a 2005 S, with a 13 or so gallon tank... I just
looked online, premium's $2.80 at the place I filled up last.

(Worried I might be starting a religious/political argument but)

PLEASE tell me no one who doesn't have a supercharger uses anything other than regular in their 1500 Valkyries?

Just FYI for anyone not aware, if your engine wasn't designed for high octane, it gains absolutely no benefit by using it, and actually has slightly less energy per gallon of fuel, and our Valkyrie's have all the engineering technology of a 1978 Buick... They have no use for high octane, the compression ratio just isn't high enough to need it.

11 gal tank on the 2015 and $2.69 for premium. So it did have maybe 1/2 gallon left but dash light kept telling me I only had 12 miles to empty 2funny

My last couple tanks in the Valk have been 90 Octane pure gas  - no ethanol. Might go back to the ethanol stuff when I start riding more regularly again.

Possibly rookie question, but shouldn't a higher octane be used if the trigger wheel is installed to advance timing?

I remember LOTS of discussion about that back when the trigger wheels first came out, some rationnal some highly charged and emotional, I'm sure someone will disagree but I've got about 100,000 miles on mine now with a 6 degree trigger wheel and only running 87 octane (Or whatever the "regular" octane is when at higher elevations.)

(And yeah, the folks who sell the trigger wheels recommend 90 octane, and probably know more than I do... (That was not said sarcastically))

Old school discussion about this:

I only pumped premium (ethanol) for winter storage.  It has just a bit less tendency to attract water and separate than regular ethanol.  But I still treated it.  Now I drive 100 miles round trip to get real gasoline (instead of political corn lobby gasoline) for winter storage.

Back when I first got my IS with 4 degree wheel, it would knock a little with regular ethanol (when stomping on it, not when putting around).  But after it got a good tune, valves, synch, yada, it stopped knocking.  I got rid of that wheel last summer.

I think that wheel was all blow and no show.

I'd giggle like a little girl for those prices. And the premium markup.

Our gas is $2.35 for reg. Most places are 60-80 cents more for premium. One place that usually has the cheapest regular marks up another $1.25 !!  tickedoff

I have one car that requires premium - bought it 10 years ago for better mileage vs. my V-10 F-350. Cost savings these days isn't what it used to be.

As long as we're complaining about gas...

I stopped at the station down at the crossroads the other
day... they had new pumps, the kind with the teevee screens
blaring out commercials and bad music. I decided I didn't
need gas that bad. Yesterday I stopped again, cause I did
need gas by then... that place had teevees too... gaahhh...

Does that stuff annoy anyone else?

Yes... Immensely. And yeah, I've been known to leave one gas station and go to another that doesn't have that crap, which only works as long as there still are some that don't.

I am in same boat, well sort of.  I thought no biggie a few years ago when 91 octane NON ethanol was only 40 cents more tops price difference.  Now, like you said is around 60-80 cents per gallon more than regular 87 octane.  So,  it still pays to save on gas driving my 63 avg mpg scooter vs. say my 17 avg mpg truck, but not much gas savings now just driving the Valk at 35 avg mpg with 87 octane.  I calculated it out once driving my scooter for say 1500 miles per year which I almost do vs. taking my truck to work/driving around otherwise, and the scooter purchase price I paid for it would be made up in 4-5 years which is right about now in gas savings alone.    17 vs. 63 avg mpg even with 91 vs. 87 octane adds up even as little at 1500 miles per year, but not as much now since 91 octane has gone up considerably.

Also, you have to figure though into the equation that at least in the midwest in the winter the 87 octane is blended with more ethanol thus the cheaper gas price for 87 gas and right about now the refineries are switching on over to summer gas blend which means the price should be going up slightly putting less ethanol blend into the mix, so the 87 vs. 91 octane price difference will be reduced here shortly but not by much.

The more important question for me though is this:  I have always wondered back in my mind if the 91 octane which I know is RARELY used sitting at these mom and pop smaller gas stations goes bad after several months of NOT putting FRESH 91 octane gas in their underground tanks, thus going BAD quicker?  91 octane gas sitting for say 6-9 months (or more) in the gas stations underground tanks not putting FRESH gas in as much can go bad right????

I'm hearing impaired and those new electronic whiz bang fuel dispensers are too cursed loud fer me. Even using a credit card takes a bit of time to git stuff punched in. Using cash Is only marginally better. 87 octane here bouts hovering right around 2 bucks a gallon. I'm thinkin high octane-93-and corn free-91-wil add near 80  90 cent a gallon. Maybe a bit more. Cage and Phatt Ghurl only require 87 octane so I generally do Not mess with it. da prez and I ran up on a fuel stop in N.C. little mom and pop place that ONLY had corn free! Butt dyno noticed the difference.  2funny RIDE SAFE.

My corner store has ethanol-free, but only in regular. A place near work also has
ethanol-free... those two places are my most regular Valkyrie fill-up places, and
I doubt either will have teevees anytime soon...  but the MINI needs high-test...
I sent a polite email to the teevee-chain today, it is a local
convenience store chain that has eight or ten stores in my general area.

Those sneaky gas company bastards?  We do realize those are businesses and businesses are in business to sell products at what they can sell them for?  They will not set their prices higher than people are willing to pay.  That would drive them out of business.  Not everyone may be willing to pay their price.  If you find yourself in such a group you are obviously not the customer the business is targeting.

It's really pretty straight forward.  I wonder how many of us would be willing to buy a business on the condition that we sell our product at less than the public is willing to pay.  If you've a problem with the price of a product in a capitalist economy don't complain about the selling business.  Complain instead at the demand of the buying public.   crazy2

At first they did. I've got them pretty much tuned out now though. I think some enterprising young Ex-NSA chap should hack into them. A continuous loop of "Debbie does Dallas" might get them to rethink their strategy. Serk ? (Just kidding) kind of.
