So... Did ya'll see the Space X commercial rocket launch of supplies to the ISS this weekend from launch pad 39A? I love this, one of the contributing factors to the high price of getting to space has been the non-reusable nature of stage 1 rockets, they'd be used once then lost to the ocean. Let free market capitalism tackle the issue, and you get this, a reusable stage 1 rocket and flies down and lands, ready to be hooked back up, refuled and used again... Freaking amazing stuff... If I didn't know better I'd swear this was Hollywood special effects, no way this could be real, but it's real... Just watch this rocket coming back for a landing after bringing it's payload into space... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeSJB-IOjzwAnother view of the reentry and landing of stage 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbm1AXWik5cAnd if you like such things, video of the historic first commercial launch from pad 39A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8CdyCqdcvQDunno if anyone else here finds this kinda stuff interesting, but I sure do, it gives me hope for the future... So figured I'd share...

It does look like special effects. How they could get that back down to the launch pad without tumbling or getting off course is amazing. Very cool indeed.

I am pleased that capitalism is being demonstrated and hope more people here and all over the world can recognize this.
Wish astronauts, rocket, aircraft and space pioneers from the past could see this.

Ya, I've been following this for the last year or so; truely amazing accomplishments. And watching the live feeds and tapes I've noticed how young the group is, not many over the age of 35 it seems. Awesome!
We just might get to Mars yet.

@serk: Yeah, another one of Elon Musk's companies (together with Tesla and others). All headquartered in the great state of California. I point to things like this when people say that USA has lost its edge in technology.

I saw this Sunday night and thought it was amazing they actually did it. I've seen a few videos over the last year of rocket tests from SpaceX returning their rockets to a launch pad, some were successful others not. But on Monday I found out Earth might be flat and we didn't really walk on the Moon so now I really don't know what to think. Maybe it is all just Duck Dodgers in the 24th and 1/2 century after all. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UU7TdtLzPrAhttps://m.youtube.com/watch?v=OEXvsGe657Q

None of it amounts to a hill of beans. Some scientist are saying the universe is nothing but a hologram. Everything is on a big computer. I'd hate to see the kid running the program.

The actual details are beyond me, even the comic-book version on the wiki page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpaceX_reusable_launch_system_development_program#TechnologiesBut with the bugs worked out, the computer can keep that thing balanced just like you or me balancing a broom on the end of our finger... -Mike "even with the earth spinning "

That's too easy, let's land it on a drone ship floating at sea to make it more interesting... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPGUQySBikQ(2/3 of their landings and recoveries will need to be done at sea, so they've got it going to recover the rocket at sea as well, but then you add in the landing pad moving, listing, and you have to have the landing pad be able to control itself as well and sync up with the rocket, working together, etc. etc. etc...) Fascinating time to be alive my friends... fascinating time... For those who geek out on such things, this is a simply explanation as to why they need to be able to land at sea: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEr9cPpuAx8And a high level, kinda fluff piece all about Space X and what their long term goals are, etc... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSv63RaZeuo

Serk is just jealous he cannot land his own flying drone that well.... It is pretty cool and amazing to see though something so big and so fast can land on a dime basically all from outer space. I wonder in our lifetime will people live in space for years at a time?

I'm almost 60, so I doubt it for me... what with radiation, bone loss and probably a million other things, living in space for a long time is lots harder than landing on a dime...

Another might be if on landing it went off course and a landing or crash landing in someone's neighborhood would not go well. Elon Musk is a current hero of my son ( Charlie age 14 ). He keeps us updated on all going on with his company. His current goal is to become an astrophysicist and work with the Musk team. A very worthy goal. When I was young I let my Father talk me out of being an Astronomer, that will never happen with me and my son.

Elon is definitely my kind of billionaire... Made his money, and now does crazy exciting stuff that everyone said couldn't be done... Tesla, Space X, working on the Hyperloop, Solar City and other cool things. Born in South Africa, but rabidly pro America. According to Musk, the United States is "[inarguably] the greatest country that has ever existed on Earth", describing it as "the greatest force for good of any country that's ever been". Musk believes outright that there "would not be democracy in the world if not for the United States", arguing there were "three separate occasions in the 20th-century where democracy would have fallen with World War I, World War II and the Cold War, if not for the United States" And a personal connection for me, he has twin sons AND triplet sons...

I'll be VERY pleasantly surprised if they manage to pull this off on the timeline they're saying, but WOW! http://www.space.com/35844-elon-musk-spacex-announcement-today.htmlHow sad is it that if this happens, this will be the very first time a human has left low Earth orbit in my wife's lifetime. (And the first time a human has gone further than low Earth orbit since I was just a little over a year old... =\ )
