« on: March 19, 2017, 09:52:14 PM »

A group of mostly Alabama Riders had a lunch ride back in late October and some interest was shown in having another Cheaha ride.

As the people who attended the Cheaha rides of yesteryear know, Tim Moore (Redvalk) went all out in planning and promoting the ride by lining up sponsors to provide free beer, prizes and such. The ride was held on the mountain and sold the motel out most every year.

For Tim, each year had to be bigger and better than the previous year. Except for the weather some years, the ride was outstanding.

I don't have the desire to try to even come close to his efforts and outcome.

I am proposing that we have a ride similar to Mac's Veteran's Day Ride in that I will make motel arrangements for a motel meeting place and a time to meet and everybody will do their own thing as far as activities, rides and such.

To that end, I propose that we meet at Oxford, AL which is not on Cheaha Mountain but on I-20 at Exit 185. It will be in sight of Cheaha Mountain. A good selection of eating places are at this Exit.

I have checked and found that there are several motels that might be suitable with rates less than $ 60.00/night. The weekend of April 21 seems to be a good date with little or no conflicts.

To gage interest, would the people who might be interested and could give an affirmative definite/maybe of attending at this point in time post as such. The number of attendees will influence the room rates.

We need a VRCC ride in this area in the spring, don't you think so?

Never heard of this before but, it looks like an interesting area to ride.   cooldude

With what I do, it's almost impossible to commit at this point but, I am interested.   Lots of good folks will travel a long ways to attend a good event.   Good luck, I'm sure this will be a wonderful event.   cooldude

??? I'd sure like to get up that way to meet some of my AL Valk brothers. If the wife gives me a short notice thumbs up I'll be headed that way with ChrisJ out of Crestview. Maybe have a few more coming too. A few us went on this ride about 6 months ago for the first time. We all enjoyed and I got my fingers crossed to make this again.  coolsmiley

Just booked my room and was told by Wayne to use the name Leon S for the room. Does this mean I owe Leon the difference between his negotiated rate and normal? Me and My Black IS should be in around 5 Friday.

No commission for me! I just talked to Wayne and he said we have 7 rooms reserved at this point.

Yesterday I became aware that Barber's is hosting the "Honda Indy Grand Prix Of Alabama" and racing will be going on both Sat. and Sun. afternoons. Race day-huge crowds. tickedoff

The lady at Barbers said visiting the Museum won't be a problem other than the crowds. The good part is, if you decide to go during the race, a good view of the track can be seen from the Museum. She also said if you want to avoid the crowds, go when the park opens at 8:00 AM. cooldude

The weather man says there's a chance of showers both Sat. and Sun. the greatest chance of rain will be starting Sat. around 5:00 PM thru 3:00 AM on Sunday. The rain should be out by daybreak on Sunday.

I had planned a ride over the mountain with lunch in Talladega and then to Barber's if there was any interest. We can still do the ride if there's interest but I'm not interested in battling the crowds. I'll take you to the Motorsports Park if you want to go.

For those coming, I look forward to seeing you tomorrow. RIDE SAFE!!

Thanks Everyone and especially Leon for putting this together.  I hope it gets more popular as the next couple years happen.  I thoroughly enjoyed riding in the mountains again.  I must admit, I need more time on mountain twisties to get back to my best riding but it was fantastic venturing up to the restaurant early this morning for breakfast.

Earl and I only stayed one night so we are home already.  So I guess I get to be the first to post a post Cheaha 17 ride report.  No rain, it all held off, Jim (from near Dothan Al) may have some wetness coming home on Sunday.  We had light traffic and made record time up hwy 9 to Lineville and then up the mountain.  The Skyway empties out right at Oxford so we just came right in without having to get on the freeway

I took a couple of pictures mostly for Bruce (BF) but it was a beautiful day on the mountain.
